Specter Aerospace

Electrical Design Engineer I/II

$99,000 – $138,000 per year

TLDR

Design and test custom avionics hardware, from analog and digital circuits through PCB bring-up, vehicle integration, and flight testing.

Role Summary

Specter Aerospace is seeking an Electrical Engineer to contribute to the development and implementation of avionics systems for hypersonic flight vehicles. This role offers hands-on experience across the avionics engineering lifecycle, including requirements development, circuit and PCB design, hardware integration, system shakedown, debugging, and testing.

A successful candidate will work closely with electrical, embedded software, GNC, mechanical, and test engineers to develop systems that support Specter’s experimental and flight vehicle programs.

About Specter Aerospace

Specter Aerospace is building the next generation of hypersonic vehicles for U.S. Forces and Allies. With offices in Boston and Peabody, MA, Specter leverages its advanced propulsion technologies, manufacturing, and testing capabilities to rapidly develop supersonic and hypersonic systems. Our Electrical Engineer I/II will be based in our Boston (Seaport) office. Funded by a mix of government R&D organizations and private funding, Specter is expanding its team in preparation for flight testing and full-scale production.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop analog and digital circuits for sensing, data acquisition, communications, power distribution, and vehicle control.
  • Perform component selection, schematic capture, PCB design, and supporting design analysis.
  • Complete PCB bring-up, characterization, troubleshooting, and verification using laboratory equipment.
  • Interface with electrical, embedded software, GNC, mechanical, and test engineers to refine requirements and define electrical interfaces.
  • Develop test plans and procedures for system shakedown, debugging, and validation.
  • Support vehicle integration, environmental testing, and flight test activities.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects from initial concept through implementation, testing, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience applying electrical engineering fundamentals through professional work, research, coursework, or student projects.
  • Familiarity with analog and digital circuit design.
  • Experience using ECAD tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, OrCAD, or similar.
  • Experience bringing up and testing custom PCBs or other electrical systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, component datasheets, and technical documentation.
  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, or signal analyzers.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with changing requirements.
  • Strong collaborative skills and a drive to produce high-quality work.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous applicable professional, research, or student-team experience.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, data converters, communication interfaces, or power electronics.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB, or embedded languages such as C, C++, or similar.
  • Experience with circuit simulation tools such as SPICE, PLECS, Simulink, or similar.
  • Understanding of grounding, shielding, filtering, signal integrity, or electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Familiarity with telemetry, data acquisition, hardware in the loop testing, or avionics ground support equipment.
  • Ability to hand-assemble and rework PCBs with small or complex components.
