Full Stack Software Engineer (associate)
TLDR
Build internal tools and real-time data pipelines to operate, analyze, and control tunnel boring machines, with dashboards for stakeholders.
The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
As an Associate Full Stack Software Engineer, you will help build and improve the internal software that runs The Boring Company's manufacturing and business operations, the systems behind how we design, build, and support our tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This role is suited for recent graduates. The Associate role is a temporary training position, and after 3-5 months you will convert to a permanent hire.
You'll design and build tools that track parts, builds, inventory, and work across the company. You'll work closely with the engineers, technicians, and operations teams who use them every day, so you'll learn their problems firsthand and turn them into software that makes them faster. You'll own your projects from idea to production and get wide exposure to the overall system architecture.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test, deploy and maintain full stack web applications for our internal manufacturing and business systems
- Own projects end to end: find the problem, talk with users to understand it, design and build a solution, and ship it
- Work directly with stakeholders in manufacturing, engineering, supply chain and operations. Watch how they actually work, and turn requests into clear requirements
- Ship frequent improvements, collect feedback, and iterate quickly
- Spot slow, manual or error-prone workflows on your own and propose better tools to fix them
- Help keep production systems reliable, secure and maintainable
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent field
- Experience building web applications with Python and JavaScript/TypeScript
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases
- Comfortable with git and Linux
- Strong grasp of data structures, algorithms, and software design fundamentals
- Clear communicator, comfortable talking with non-technical users and asking good questions
- Takes ownership and follows through without needing step-by-step direction
- Comfortable working in ambiguous, changing environments with imperfect information
- Able and motivated to learn new skills quickly
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with Django, Django REST Framework, and React
- Has shipped and maintained software that real users relied on (internships, jobs, or side projects all count)
- Experience with Docker and containerized deployments
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and writing automated tests
- Experience deploying to GCP, AWS, or other cloud platforms
- Familiarity with object storage (S3, MinIO) and in-memory caches (Redis, Valkey)
- Understanding of networking and web security fundamentals
- Exposure to manufacturing, supply chain, or ERP/MES systems
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary
- Willing to spend time on the shop floor and in the field with the people who use your tools
