Indirect and Direct Tax Compliance and Reporting Manager
TLDR
Manage UK and international VAT/GST and corporation tax compliance while supporting cross-border expansion, tax risk, and control frameworks.
Hello, we’re Starling. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. Starling Bank is powered by Engine, the banking platform we built ourselves and which we are now rolling out to other banks around the world. We employ more than 3,500 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.
We are looking for a Tax Manager to join our growing tax team. Alongside the Head of Indirect Tax, Senior Corporation Tax Manager and the finance, payroll and HR teams, you will assist with the group’s UK and international VAT/GST and corporation tax affairs. This will include supporting a wide range of tax projects, international expansion projects, and managing tax compliance and tax risk.
This is an exciting time to be joining Starling Bank given its growth trajectory to date and its ambitious expansion plans in both the UK and internationally. You will support these plans from a tax compliance and reporting perspective.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the Group’s UK and international VAT/GST compliance, including quarterly VAT returns, monthly GST returns, partial exemption calculations, optimising input VAT recovery and working collaboratively with advisors.
- Support cross-border expansion by advising on international VAT/GST and corporation tax registration triggers, and place-of-supply rules.
- Assist in managing the Group’s UK and international corporation tax compliance including quarterly tax provisions, quarterly instalment payments and corporation tax returns.
- Support the organisation and wider tax team by taking a leading role in tax risk management and governance, including overseeing and improving the VAT and corporation tax control frameworks.
- Liaison between the finance and tax teams, as required across the taxes.
Requirements
- A strong indirect and direct tax compliance and accounting background, gained in practice and/or industry.
- Experience of international taxes and banking taxes would be an advantage.
- Enthusiasm and a drive to expand your knowledge in new areas is as important as experience.
- Professional Qualification: ACA, ACCA, CTA with at least five years professional experience.
- A self-starter and independent worker with strong interpersonal skills.
- Well organised with the ability to plan and deliver on tight deadlines with attention to detail.
- A practical and commercial approach to problem solving, and the ability to communicate complex tax matters to both a tax and non-tax audience.
Interview Process
Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:
- Step 1; interview with Head of Indirect Tax and Senior Corporation Tax Manager
