Mechanical Engineer (R&D)

TLDR

Design fixtures and automated test stations that take depth camera systems from R&D benches through production, enabling repeatable optical, electrical, and functional testing.

About RealSense

RealSense delivers industry-leading depth cameras and vision technology used in autonomous mobile robots, humanoids, access control, industrial automation, healthcare and more. With a mission to deliver world class perception systems for Physical AI and safely integrate robotics and AI into everyday life, RealSense provides intelligent, secure and reliable vision systems that help machines navigate and interact with the human world.

The Role

We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Engineering team within R&D. This team designs and builds the systems used across the product lifecycle - from depth and face cameras through the benches that support design bring-up and engineering characterization, all the way to the automated testers that run on our production lines. You'll own the mechanical design of these systems, developing fixtures and stations that start as engineering tools and scale into robust, high-throughput production equipment. It's a hands-on role where your work enables reliable, repeatable testing from the first prototype to volume manufacturing.

What You'll Do

  • Design mechanical fixtures, jigs, and test stations for both design/engineering validation and production-line testing of depth camera modules.
  • Develop precision holding and positioning mechanisms that locate units repeatably for optical, electrical, and functional testing.
  • Take test systems from R&D bench setups through to hardened, production-ready equipment on the manufacturing floor.
  • Partner with test, electrical, and software engineers to integrate mechanical hardware into automated test equipment (ATE).
  • Own fixture design from concept through prototyping, build, and deployment.
  • Design for repeatability, throughput, and operator ergonomics in a production environment.
  • Work with machine shops and suppliers on fabrication, tooling, and first-article inspection.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues on existing testers and drive continuous improvement in reliability and cycle time.

What You'll Bring

  • B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Min. of 5 years' experience in mechanical design, test fixtures, automation equipment, or precision tooling.
  • Strong grasp of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Hands-on CAD experience (SolidWorks or equivalent).
  • Experience designing equipment that was built and put into use - bonus if it spanned prototype through production.
  • Experience of leading multidisciplinary machines design and integration end to end by himself and combining with subcontractors.
  • Practical, hands-on approach - comfortable on the lab and production floor debugging hardware.
  • Fluent English; strong communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with automated test equipment (ATE) or production-line test systems.
  • Familiarity with precision motion (stages, actuators) and pneumatics.
  • Familiarity with robotic arms for testing machines.
  • Knowledge of camera modules, imaging systems, or optical alignment fixturing.
  • FEA experience (structural and/or thermal).
  • Experience integrating mechanical designs with electrical and software test systems.

RealSense builds advanced depth cameras and perception systems that enable robots and automation technologies to function intelligently in the real world. Our solutions are utilized across various industries, including healthcare, industrial automation, and access control, making it easier for machines to navigate and engage safely with humans.
