Senior Research Associate/Scientist I, Metabolic Modeling

Emeryville, United States

Senior Research Associate/Scientist I, Metabolic Modeling

This person will be responsible for carrying out metabolic (flux-balance analysis) and fermentation models for existing projects and new client engagements under consideration by business development. These models are used to calculate maximum theoretical yields of products as well as expected performance in fermentation (using either our internal process or our client’s process). This person will be responsible for running models using tools developed internally by the modeling team, evaluating the model results under different parameters and assumptions, and summarizing results for delivery to internal stakeholders. They will also be involved in onboarding and curating new metabolic models.

Metrics for success include

  • gaining a working understanding of flux balance analysis and fermentation modeling principles
  • timely delivery of modeling requests
  • clear communication with other members of the Modeling Center of Excellence about assumptions and choices made in the execution of a model
  • aiding team members with general housekeeping of internal codebase
  • documentation of work done; and writing reports that clearly summarize model results for sharing with internal stakeholders.

We favor candidates with experience with biochemical reaction networks, and metabolic pathways. Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or a related field, 1-2 years experience with fermentation and/or metabolic modeling. Knowledge of flux balance analysis as well as modeling approaches to fermentation processes is highly preferred, however, not an absolute requirement. The candidate should have experience in coding, with knowledge of Python as a bonus. Experience in deterministic/stochastic optimization is a desirable qualification. We are interested in candidates with technical training in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. Lastly, we look for candidates that have a track record of displaying creativity in developing new protocols and techniques to speed up our workflows.  Ideal candidates will have knowledge of statistical tests and tools, and experience communicating between cross functional teams with different technical expertise (e.g. between biologists and software developers)

Technical Must-Haves:

  • Experience with metabolic and fermentation modeling
  • Knowledge of metabolism and biochemistry
  • Experience in programming
  • Experience summarizing and communicating technical results with non-technical stakeholders (e.g. business development).

Must haves, personality:

  • Ability to deliver results on tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to write up results

Founded in 2013 and based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Zymergen is a technology company unlocking the power of biology. We deliver better economics for products made from biology that are used across industries, bring new products to market faster, and develop novel products. Our proprietary platform uses robots and machine learning to engineer microbes faster, more predictably, and to a level of performance previously unattainable. These microbes, and the products they produce, have broad applications across industries such as chemicals and materials, agriculture, and healthcare. For more information visit www.zymergen.com.
