Editorial Communications Director

BuzzFeed is seeking an aggressive, news and media-obsessed communications pro to lead editorial publicity based in New York. The person in this role will work closely with BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, Features Editor Steve Kandell, Executive Editor, News, Shani Hilton, Investigations Editor Mark Schoofs and will be largely responsible for BuzzFeed News. S/he will also oversee a small team and the promotion of scoops, breaking news stories, and entertainment and lifestyle content produced by the site’s editorial team across BuzzFeed News, BuzzTeam and BuzzFeed Life. From shaping communications strategy to highlighting our editors and the content they produce, we are looking for someone who has a passion for media relations, loves working with journalists, and is inspired by what BuzzFeed produces every day across all platforms. This role will report to the VP, Communications, but work very closely with editorial.


What You’ll Do:

  • Lead strategy and execution for editorial communications.

  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to know what they’re working on, what’s coming up, and develop pr strategy to best position their work.

  • Constantly talk to press, pitch producers, and grow your media contacts.

  • Serve as pr point of contact during breaking news and around major events.

  • Heavy focus on politics as we build toward the 2016 election, so obsession with news/politics greatly preferred.


  • Demonstrated success securing media coverage across various platforms (tv, print, web, radio). Show off your Rolodex! Impress us with your contacts!

  • Deep understanding of media and tech landscape, and a strong editorial sensibility.

  • Excellent organization skills and strong communicator - we want to know you write well, and can talk to all kinds of different people.

  • Ability to work well under pressure, juggle multiple tasks on tight deadlines, lead projects, and be a strategic advisor in time-sensitive scenarios.

  • Passion for following media, digging into trends, and staying ahead of the news cycle.

  • 4-6 years experience inside a news organization and/or in the trenches of pitching on a daily basis.
