BuzzFeed News is looking for someone to join our ambitious and creative national news team to cover one of the most challenging beats out there: drugs, with an emphasis on the country’s emerging marijuana industry.
This is not a job for a beginner. We need an experienced journalist who can combine great writing, quick thinking, and in-depth reporting to produce long-form features, shorter enterprise pieces off the news of the moment, and thoughtful analyses. The strongest candidates will have a proven record of covering the politics, business, and science of weed and other drugs. Travel is part of the job, given America’s constantly shifting relationship with everything from medical marijuana to opioids. So is creativity in the way you think about a beat.
We’re not looking for a reporter to parrot what others are doing; we’re looking for someone with the sources, experience, and open-mindedness to break stories everyone else has to follow, and to tell them in a compelling manner that draws in everyone from potheads to folks who’ve never inhaled. You’ll work with a close-knit team of national reporters covering other beats, and two editors. Ability to work well with them, as well as to collaborate with our video, data, and design teams, is crucial.
This person will report to the national editor, Tina Susman. The reporter can ideally be based in New York; Los Angeles; San Francisco; or Denver.
