Director of Software Engineer

Zinio is looking for a Director of Software Engineering to join our team in a full time capacity. The Director of Software Engineering will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer working in our Ho Chi Minh City office. Working with the CTO, the candidate will be the key senior leader driving the design and implementation of significant software components of Zinio’s platform ensuring the company is positioned for growth.

The Director of Software Engineering is responsible for overseeing software engineers. This is a hands-on role where you will be using your experience at software engineering to lead the engineering functions and mentor the staff. In addition, you will use your experience solving significant and complex technical problems and partner closely with the rest of our executive team. The Director of Software Engineering must possess strong leadership, management and communication skill as well as the ability to coach and transform a diverse and talented team into a high-performing delivery machine. The desired individual is someone who will bring knowledge and creativity to the position as well as have the discipline to drive results and follow established fundamental processes. 

 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide long-term direction and technology leadership. 

  • Have overall responsibility and ownership for the design, development, delivery and on-going 
maintenance and enhancements of major software components of Zinio platforms. 

  • Accountable for driving the company’s engineering and product development organization 
working on front and back end projects. 

  • Manage multiple complex projects and support efforts with a “hands on” style that affords a 
high degree of interaction with the process and team. 

  • Anticipate and identify project risks and make recommendations to reduce said risks. 

  • Proactively identify and resolve resource conflicts, balance resources to accommodate 
demand, and set resource priorities. 

  • Recruit, attract and retain top engineering talent. 

  • Optimize modern software design/development techniques to yield significant productivity 
gains in managing development costs handling sequences of large prjects quickly. 

  • Participate in team-based, collaborative development process ranging from in-depth high-level 
design to code review. 

  • Actively contribute to new feature development and bug fixing. 

  • Implement continuous improvement of software development processes, procedures and best 
practices.
  • Manage all Quality Assurance and develop automated testing related to platform development. 

  • Collaborate and coordinate with other senior leaders to ensure the deliver of required projects 
and software. 

  • Oversee day-to-day technical operations of all reporting staff. 

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 


 

Your Required Experience:

  • Has demonstrable success as a software engineering manager in a rapidly growing environment with the ability to lead and grow an engineering team.
  • Must possess a history of strong leadership, deep practical engineering knowledge and a proven track record for timely project delivery, project management and cost control. 

  • Full project lifecycle experience including analysis, design, development and implementation of large-scale web-based systems. 

  • Experience as a team leader and technical mentor. 

  • Experience with modern source control, build and test systems. 

  • Experience advising on the construction of risk assessment frameworks and organizational 
structure. 

  • 5+ years experience developing web-based technologies. 

  • Experience managing team dynamics, building team relationships, mentoring team members 
and delivering feedback. 

  • Providing design and quality review on technology projects. 

  • Strong communicator within all levels of the organization. 

  • Familiarity with software development methodologies such as Scrum or XP. 

  • Prior experience working with mobile applications and platforms is desired.
