Systems Engineer

 

Overview:

  • SpaceX is seeking a systems engineer to join our Flight Reliability team to help analyze the Falcon 9, Dragon, and Launch system designs and operations for potential failure modes. The goal of this analysis is to ensure the systems are robust to failures and can complete the mission successfully, whether that mission is launching a satellite or sending humans to space.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Responsible Engineers to ensure potential failure modes are identified, risks are properly assessed, failure preventative measures are included in the design of hardware and/or software to eliminate or minimize risks, and any residual risks are accepted. 
  • Perform integrated analyses across the complete system including the system interfaces to design NASA human certified hardware.
  • Complete engineering analyses of systems to identify mission ending failures and safety hazards and work with the appropriate Responsible Engineers to eliminate and/or control the hazards.
  • Analyze the safety and reliability of system designs, upgrades, and operation procedures and rules.
  • Analyze and review historical data, system designs, interfaces, environments and other relevant system data to identify the potential for catastrophic events or risk and take measures to mitigate such events and risk.
  • Perform integration of requirements and interfaces across all systems of a spacecraft to meet all customer requirements and track associated verification events.
  • Interact with external certifying organizations to obtain approvals, risk acceptance, and waivers as required.
  • Support real-time operations of Falcon launch vehicle and Dragon spacecraft operations in the SpaceX Mission Control Center.
  • Perform root cause analysis as required for anomalies in test and in flight.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering discipline or Physics.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in system engineering, system safety, or integration experience.

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • General familiarity with the disciplines necessary for launch vehicle and spacecraft flight including: Propulsion, Avionics, GN&C, Flight Software, Mission Operations, Systems Engineering, and Integration.
  • Capable of solving complex problems on schedule as an individual or as a member or leader of a team.
  • Familiarity of launch vehicle or spacecraft requirements and approaches to safety and failure tolerance.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work across all departments.

  • Must be willing to travel
