Gimlet Media is hiring an

Intern, Science Vs

Brooklyn, United States

The Company

Gimlet media tells arresting stories and creates moments of empathy through audio. Our roster of podcasts includes the category leaders StartUp and Reply All and in 2015, we were named one of the top 10 most innovative media companies in the world by Fast Company. We are looking for ambitious, curious, talented and kind people to make our next slate of groundbreaking shows.

Our team comes from diverse backgrounds but we rally around making amazing things by working hard, embracing creativity, and supporting one another. Gimlet is a place where good ideas are rewarded and succeed on their merits, no matter what your title.

Science Vs is the show that pits facts against fads. We debunk popular ideas (the G-spot, organic food, attachment parenting) according to science and make a lot of terrible puns along the way. We take facts seriously, but not ourselves.

The Job

We’re looking for a full-time intern (it’s paid!) who can fact check scripts, hustle for citations and read scientific papers. The successful candidate will be able to parse complicated jargon into clear and simple concepts, and assist the team to make sure scripts are factually correct.

Only candidates with science research experience will be considered.

What You’ll Do

  • Fact check scripts - making sure any citations are in context and correct
  • Research topic areas using scientific papers
  • Listen to interviews and select the best tape
  • Assemble early versions of episodes in ProTools
  • Provide feedback and comments on draft scripts and the sound of the show
  • Write engaging, snappy copy for the web and our social platforms

What You Have

  • Science research experience (post grad preferred, but not required).
  • Radio experience not necessary. We are happy to teach the successful candidate technical and field recording skills. But, you need to have a passion and interest in radio and science journalism.

This is a full-time, temporary, role, based in our Brooklyn, NY office.

Please apply with a cover letter, resume and responses to the following questions. This posting will close at 5 pm ET on Friday, November 18th.

1) Please answer the following, and include citations.

  • How many people died from mass shootings in the US in 2014?

2) Fact check the following paragraph by rewriting any sections that are factually incorrect:

When a US research team assessed a dozen studies on childhood depression, they found that parenting accounted for about 10 percent of why a kid has depression. By contrast, the researchers said, genetic influences may make up between 36–60% of the reasons children have depression.

3) Explain autophagy and why it’s important in 100 words or less (imagine that it would be for a Science Vs script!)
