iFixit is hiring a

Quality Control and Product Specialist

San Luis Obispo, United States

iFixit's staff is the focal point of a global community showing people how to fix the things they own. We believe that we can make the world better by empowering people to take control of their hardware. We are the world's foremost experts on Apple repair, and we've set the gold-standard for online repair documentation. We have already helped millions of people fix their own devices, and we plan to help tens of millions more. We ship our replacement parts and repair tools to customers all over the world. We're growing, and looking for highly-motivated individuals to join our team. iFixit offers health benefits, profit sharing, and may other perks to all full-time employees.

The Quality Control and Product Specialist will work to further the reputation of iFixit as a guaranteed quality parts source. iFixit seeks to teach people how to fix everything. Beyond teaching how to do a repair, we also want to provide access to the parts to do it as well. This will result in a diverse catalog of parts that span multiple types of products from mobile devices to washing machines.

You will actively monitor return rates, finding and fixing quality issues in all iFixit products. You’ll work closely with both our procurement and inventory processing teams to maintain our quality standards and solve specific problems. Other tasks may include competitor quality analysis, testing high-value returns that can be reclaimed for re-sale, and documenting quality issues both internally and for our suppliers. We need someone with a knack for tinkering, fixing and troubleshooting. The type of products you’ll be working with could be very diverse so a willingness to work with a wide array of products (mobile phones to toasters) is a must.

The position will involve a lot of data analysis as well. You must be comfortable working with numbers, Excel, and basic statistics. You’ll need a good eye to spot trends, anomalies, and small details both within large sets of data and with physical items. Experience with SQL or other databases is beneficial, but not required. If you’re not already familiar, you should be willing and able to learn MySQL. The ability to learn quickly, work independently and efficiently, and remember details is required. Integrity, reliability, and attention to detail are a must.

These a just a few examples of some specific things that you might work on:

  • Testing a bunch of parts from a potential new vendor
  • Looking at return rates and reasons for a specific product to figure out how to solve a common issue
  • Adjust or create a quality specification for a given product
  • Find a source to recover value from unsellable products (like something from an RMA)
  • Monitor trends in the repair industry to spot common problems with a certain product
  • Review internal testing data to evaluate current vendors
  • Define testing procedures for a new product

This position is at our conveniently located San Luis Obispo headquarters. We are looking to fill a full-time position effective immediately. We will not accept part-time applicants. Approximate hours for this position are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm.
