Head of User Experience

Wayfair is hiring a Head of User Experience Design, who will head up the UX design team to envision and lead the innovation and optimization of user experience on all platforms including mobile, app, desktop. The right candidate will be an entrepreneur with experience in UX, product management, E-commerce, and high growth business leadership.

Specific Responsibilities:


Customer Experience Architect: Design the system that enables consumers to imagine and furnish their homes and makes Wayfair a go-to top 50 mobile destination for home goods, room planning, and home design inspiration. Address the basics of eCommerce with consistent and simple experiences. Define the paradigms that integrate new technology from augmented reality and room planning to messaging and GPS delivery tracking. As a head of product design you will define and own the system that defines our customer experience. Responsibilities will include overseeing the common experiences for Wayfair customers; working with engineering and product managers to build predictable user interface solutions; and ongoing ownership of platform standards, pattern library, framework development, and experience architecture to ensure reusable and scalable components across all product teams.


Consumer Empathy: Deep understanding and curiosity of how people think, process information, and behave. Whether concepting new experiences or refining post-launch iterations, the right candidate is ever focused on the consumer while being able to balance technology constraints, business goals, and design vision. The right candidate is also effective in advocating for the consumer and passionate about building amazing product experiences on her behalf; he/she needs to advocate effectively and galvanize others into doing what’s right for the user.


Web Development: Experience in consumer and mobile software development. We are looking for a design and development visionary who can step change Wayfair’s web and mobile experience across all product teams, while working in tight collaboration with senior leadership on product strategy.  While not necessarily someone with formal design or engineering training, per se, the right candidate should be extremely familiar with user experience design, product management, engineering, and agile development environments - and be able to turn complex use cases into intuitive and shippable product experiences.


Strategic Change-Agent: Successful track record as a creative, impactful, and collaborative visionary and change agent on product strategy and user experience. A strong leader and communicator. A mix of thoughtleader who can take a step back on the overarching goals and opportunities, and a product practitioner who can meticulously work alongside his/her teams with domain knowledge and design prowess. We are looking for a passionate inventor personality (send along any evidence of authoring thought or geeking out - patents, blogs, or articles) who can also be practical and persuasive in driving innovation within a cross-matrixed organization to meet business goals.


Process Architect: Development and ownership of a design process that enables efficiency/speed and ensures a positive and ever-improving user experience and team culture. It must follow your system but also leave ample room to solve new consumer problems, incorporate new technology, and manage ongoing acceptability/usability.


Team leader: Track record of managing a large team well, including the ability to hire design talent, ability to motivate and broaden team capabilities, effective resource management, etc. A level-headed and fast thinking collaborator who can build a strong collaborative relationship with business and engineering teams.  Ability to “walk the walk” with the following technical skills relevant for execution: enough technical knowledge to design for feasibility and enough design knowledge for meticulous ownership of product launches. 


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Eight+ (8) years of experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer, or similar UX-related role
  • Fluency in best practices for information architecture (IA) and interaction design (IxD), user-centered design process, as well as strong knowledge of user experience principles and techniques
  • At least four (4) years of experience creating prototypes or highly detailed wireframes for complex web applications
  • At least (2) years of experience as an information architect or similar related role
  • Familiarity with user interface patterns for web
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in a collaborative team and directly with developers for implementation of designs
  • An online portfolio or samples of work demonstrating relevant experience
  • Demonstrated history of managing other designers
  • Solid experience using Sketch and Invision


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with or background in visual design
  • Experience with large-scale or ecomm based projects
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to be self-directed when needed
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present a strong rationale for design decisions
  • A bachelor's degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction (HCI), or related UX degree is ideal
  • Demonstrated history of acquiring user data (e.g., conducting usability studies, performing user research) is a big plus
  • Ability to prototype in HTML, JavaScript, & CSS is a plus
