Front-End Software Engineer - Web Performance

Come join our newly created team of web performance enthusiasts who own site performance at Wayfair.com and all of Wayfair’s brands. We live and breathe web technologies and JavaScript is the language of the web.

Working closely with our StoreFront and JavaScript Engineering teams, you’ll help improve web performance across all of our sites while also handling framework level development and R&D of new web technologies and best practices in site performance to advocate across engineering. If you get excited about things like Google RAIL, BigPipe, and Critical Path CSS, we want to talk with you.  

What you’ll do on the web performance team:

  • Find and solve interesting site performance problems
  • Investigate issues affecting customer facing sites that get millions of views per day.
  • Instrument single-page JavaScript apps for advanced performance monitoring
  • Build out both synthetic and real user monitoring
  • Rebuild site features and develop creative solutions for speed
  • Analyze performance metrics and create plans for improvements
  • AB test site performance technologies to assess their impact on customer behavior.
  • Mentor, educate and advocate for web performance across all engineering teams
  • Determine what to monitor to ensure we’re collecting the appropriate metrics

An ideal engineer has:

  • 4+ years web development experience (You’ll be coding at least 50% of the time)
  • Significant development experience with JavaScript heavy web applications
  • Passion for web performance and technical ability to rip apart existing features and re-architect them to be faster, cleaner and more maintainable
  • Enthusiasm to outdo the status quo, problem solve and plow around obstacles

Nice to haves:

  • Full-stack experience and work with relational databases
  • Examples of open source projects
  • Experience building developer tools
  • Active participation in Boston technology meetups
  • Examples of web performance work you have done or ideas on how you would make improvements on existing ecommerce sites (including Wayfair!)
  • Understanding of web performance profiling tools (SolarWinds, XDebug, XHPROF, Chrome DevTools, Phantomas, WebPagetest)
