Job Title: Senior Technical Writer-API Documentation

Position Description:

Okta is looking for a programmer writer to assist in creating, maintaining, curating, and testing documentation to enable internal and external developers to use Okta APIs and SDKs effectively. The candidate should have a solid foundation in REST, including the use of Postman collections. The candidate is expected to inspect APIs and document an overview, the attributes, the objects, and the operations. The ideal candidate has a passion for writing developer-centric documentation, such as API Reference Guides, Getting Started with SDKs, and  sample code for a highly skilled audience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Work closely with engineers and product managers as APIs are developed to document the APIs in real time.
  • Document SDKs ported into various languages
  • Utilize Postman collections to run APIs and capture return values.
  • Verify and reconcile changes with existing documentation. For example, new APIs might affect error codes, start up procedures, etc.
  • Author documentation in Markdown and publish to the Okta Developer site.
  • Participate in daily and weekly scrum meetings and standups.
  • Work with other members of the Documentation Team to ensure uniformity in language and writing style.


Minimum REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of REST principles and design including hypermedia types (e.g., JSON HAL)
  • Experience using distributed source code management systems like GitHub
  • Understanding of markdown transformation engines and content management systems 
  • Experience developing code samples a strong plus
  • Good written English skills–editing skills and experience a plus
  • Knowledge of XML or HTML
  • Experience in the development process for swiftly changing, dynamic software
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • A focus on quality and detail and the ability to handle multiple tasks within a fast-paced environment
  • Strong customer advocate mentality
  • Ability to follow style and usage guidelines
  • Familiarity with API documentation systems like Swagger or I/O Docs is a plus

Education and Training:

Bachelor's degree is preferred
