Accessibility Advisor, Learner Services

The Learner Services department’s role in student success is to create a culture and environment that unleashes the full potential of all the students at SAIT. Our primary goal is to support Student-First Culture, by focusing on student success and mobilizing all campus community members in this shared goal.

The Opportunity

Accessibility Services’ mandate is to facilitate SAIT’s legal duty to accommodate students with disabilities as required by Alberta human rights law and SAIT’s AC 1.3 Policy. The Accessibility Advisor plays a key role in this mandate. The Accessibility Advisor reviews documentation of a disability to determine students’ eligibility for accommodations and services. The Accessibility Advisor consults with the Accessibility Services Manager when interpreting complex assessment reports.  

The Accessibility Advisor recommends and facilitates accommodations and services based on the unique needs of the student and the academic requirements of the course or program of study.  The Accessibility Advisor provides individual case management to students with various disabilities or health conditions. 

This position accesses funding for accommodations and services from external agencies.  A thorough knowledge of how a variety of disabilities can impact student learning in a post-secondary education environment is essential as the Accessibility Advisor monitors and advises students in their educational pursuits. In addition to work with students, the Accessibility Advisor consults with instructors and Academic Chairs on how to provide reasonable accommodations for students in their programs.  The Accessibility Advisor may provide training to the campus community on disability issues and policies and laws related to students with disabilities

The Role

  • Manage and maintain medical, psychoeducational, neuropsychological records in a confidential manner 
  • Verify documentation from healthcare specialists to ensure that appropriate accommodation is provided to students  
  • Conduct screening interviews for students and provide referrals for appropriate assessments and resources as required 
  • Provide guidance to students for management of disabilities and health conditions in educational and workplace settings 
  • Ensure reasonable academic accommodations and adaptive resources are provided to students as required  
  • Attend industry events and network with professionals to obtain current information on provision of services to students with disabilities in post-secondary education as required 
  • Coordinate events for Accessibility Services and promote information to educate SAIT community on services and students with disabilities  

  • Judgement/Innovation
  •  Independent management of day-to-day duties to ensure that students receive appropriate accommodation in a timely manner 
  • Ability to perform and interpret screening interviews and questionnaires 
  • Problem-solving skills to resolve accommodation issues and use discretionary judgement to appropriately assess emergency situations 
  • Ability to work independently and in teams 
  • Strong communication skills as a key contact for Accessibility Services to internal and external stakeholders 
  • Ability to interact with distressed or difficult individuals in a professional manner 
  • Concerns regarding interpretation of complex psychoeducational assessment reports or other disability-related documentation
  • Issues that may contravene human rights, FOIP, SAIT established policies 
  • Highly sensitive or complex cases 
  • Student, parent, instructor concerns that cannot be resolved by this position 
  • Identify, recommend, and develop efficient processes for Accessibility Services as required 
  • Identify and recommend ways to increase physical and instructional accessibility at SAIT 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, or disability-related field 
  • 2+ years experience in interpretation of medical documentation preferred
  • Experience in post-secondary education preferred
