Tomorrow.io is launching a satellite constellation of space-borne observing platforms to offer global observational coverage and to address the grand forecasting challenges. The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) team is developing data assimilation systems to provide the most accurate weather forecast at a global scale. We are looking for an Atmospheric Scientist with experience in numerical modeling and data assimilation to extract the maximum out of our proprietary observations.
What you'll do:
The goal of this position is to build a state-of-the-science global forecasting system capable of assimilating Tomorrow.io's observations (active microwave and sounders) on top of publicly available ones. We value and support open-source development, and we have decided to base our data assimilation (DA) system on the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI) and the Unified Forecast System (UFS). You can expect to be an integral part of a full cycle of product development and operational implementation. Our immediate goal is to provide proof of value for our satellite network by designing and running Observation System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs). Beyond this, you can contribute in a wide variety of areas, from implementing radar DA into JEDI, to creating machine learning-based observation operators, to implementing robust forecast sensitivity - observation impact (FSOI) capabilities, or to improving the computational efficiency of our codes.
What you'll bring:
As an Atmospheric Scientist, you will contribute to the scientific and engineering advancement of the weather and forecasting capabilities, develop new forecasting capabilities for all the subsystems of the Earth, and apply your subject matter expertise as needed in support of our clients.
Competencies
Tech Stack:
Python along with C++ or Fortran, HPC experience
So if you're looking to join a team that is at the forefront of innovation to help build the biggest weather platform in the world, this is the place for you!
Please note: While this role is listed as Washington, DC, we are also looking for candidates in Golden, CO, Boston, MA or Bourne, MA.
Anticipated salary range is $125K-$145K, subject to local market and a candidate’s skills and experience. Health, leave and other benefits included.
