The Uber Advanced Technology Center is the Pittsburgh division of the elite Uber Engineering Team; a high-performance culture marked by fearlessness and hyper-productivity. We focus on the development of key long-term technologies that advance Uber’s mission of bringing safe, reliable transportation to everyone, everywhere. Our research is primarily in the areas of mapping, vehicle safety, and autonomy. Our team is comprised of world-renowned researchers with decades of experience and we’re looking for superstar engineers who can work harder, faster, and smarter without sacrificing technical excellence.
As a Build Engineer, you'll be at the core of the software development process driving adoption and implementation of industry best practices throughout the organization. The role requires collaboration with many different groups, and is central to our mission to deliver quality cutting-edge software, deploying to embedded, desktop and mobile platforms. Build and release engineering enables and materializes the work of all the other engineering disciplines, and thus you'll have the opportunity to make a significant impact across the organization. The experience you will gain will be unique and unmatched.
HERE ARE THE KINDS OF SKILLS WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
You should be a capable build engineer, with proven track record of delivering large software systems in industry. Our software teams develop in C++ and Python for deployment into embedded, desktop, mobile and HPC cluster environments, and do their work on Linux, OS X, and Windows. As a build engineer, you should have strong Unix systems knowledge, be fluent with Python, have experience with CMake, as well as familiarity with other build and continuous integration systems used in large software projects. Previous experience with cross-development is a plus.
Commitment to Quality.
You're the kind of engineer who knows and embraces industry best practices, and who thrives on applying that knowledge to enable great things for the team as a whole. You should be adaptable, but devoted to finding and implementing the best solutions to the complex technical problems of efficiently building and releasing software. You should aspire to continuous improvement, applying the best techniques you know today, and striving to stay abreast of new and better techniques to apply tomorrow.
You're not afraid to speak up when you see an opportunity for improvement. You can iterate quickly, without losing sight of either quality or long-range vision. You can hold your own in a spirited debate.
You should be able to dive into a large variety of systems including databases, network file systems, web applications, mobile apps, HPC clusters, and other distributed systems. In addition to a having a deep and diverse toolbox, you should have a strong intuition for 'knowing what you don't know' and an ability to learn quickly.
You should approach your work with discipline and a passion for displacing chaos with order. Build and release engineers curate and deliver the work of many others, and serve as the conduit for that work to be applied out in the world. You understand that a build process isn't useful until it's measurable and repeatable, and you pride yourself on creating robust, documented solutions.
A team player.
You believe that you can achieve more on a team — that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You rely on candid feedback from your peers to drive continuous improvement, and can give the same in return, doing both with grace and humility.
We're bringing Uber to every major city in the world. We need brains and passion to make it happen and to make it happen in style.
