The Engine, launched by MIT, invests in early-stage companies solving the world’s biggest problems through a convergence of breakthrough science, engineering, and leadership. We accelerate the path to market for Tough Tech companies through the combination of capital, infrastructure, and network.
The Engine is located in Central Square in Cambridge and operates a 30,000 square foot facility of office, lab, and makerspace at our headquarters in Cambridge, MA. We are currently building out an additional 200,000 square foot facility in Kendall Square, that will open doors in Late 2022. The space is meant to provide a Home for Tough Tech Founders and give our portfolio companies and the Tough Tech ecosystem an agile solution to real estate challenges.

Roles and Responsibilities
The Engine is looking to find an experienced and entrepreneurial VP of Business Development and Corporate Partnerships to lead an external effort in building a network around The Engine. The ideal candidate has closed strategically-important and financially-meaningful transactions that are win-win; has a technical education (science or engineering) with work experience as a technical person; has experience within or has conducted business with large corporations; has worked in a fast-paced, team environment.
The position reports to the VP of Operations and has responsibilities for business development activities including building The Engine Network. The position also supports our portfolio companies and creating partnerships and opportunities between key partners and our startups.
Key responsibilities include:
Developing a broad network of external corporate partners, individual experts, co-investors, and others for the Engine Network including leading agreement processes
Developing the engagement plan and platform to support The Engine Network. Facilitate relationships and optimize engagements between corporate partners and Tough Tech companies at the level of CTOs and Heads of Research of corporate partners and founder-CEOs, founder-CTOs for tough tech companies. Outline a plan and resources for an enabling platform(s) and oversee execution.
Working with the team on identifying corporate partners and individuals in support of our events and programs including the Annual Tough Tech Summit, and the operations of our Tough Tech Hub space that is coming online in 2022.
Assist portfolio companies in their strategy and tactics related to business development activities such as partnering, licensing
Skills and Qualifications
Motivated by The Engine’s mission to enable tough tech entrepreneurs to create world-changing companies
Track record in strategically-important and financially-meaningful business transactions (please send deal sheet)
Minimum 7 years of direct industry experience in “tough tech” (biotech, high tech, industrial products)
BS, MS or PhD in a science or engineering discipline from top tier program
Curious and comfortable with diverse engineering and scientific disciplines
Strong interpersonal skills, significant network and excellent reputation; high adaptability and problem-solving skills
Ability to triangulate market dynamics, specific company interests, and individual stakeholders, within various tough tech industries
