Business Intelligence Developer (Data Engineering)

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

We’re a leading online reviews platform, free and open to all. Our mission is to be a universal symbol of trust. We are well on our way - but there’s still an exciting journey ahead of us. Do you want to join us?

As a BI Developer you will ensure our analytics layer solutions are developed following best practices, and are cost-effective and reliable. It will be your responsibility, along with our Data Platforms team, to ensure that the technologies we use are being leveraged appropriately to get our data to our end users while maintaining appropriate flexibility and security. You will be accountable for creating and maintaining the data platform that is used for reporting, data mining and analytics across the business. There will be a blend of project and BAU work in this role, and currently a focus for the team is migrating to Looker, our new BI tool.

To be successful in this role, you will have the initiative and incentive to work in a complex environment involving multiple integration points and collaboration with other teams. You must have conviction behind their ideas to create a scalable system and lead the junior developers who are creating it, ensuring the final quality of the product.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining appropriate ETL processes leveraging GCP and Airflow, and likely other technologies
  • Documenting relevant data models for use both within the team and in other parts of the business to enable self-service
  • Building dashboards for stakeholders and assisting stakeholders with building their own dashboards and reports as we roll out self-service analytics
  • Documentation of our data pipelines to provide visibility to other parts of the business

Required capabilities:

  • +2 years experience
  • Endlessly curious, proactive, and driven - you’re passionate about data and technology and how it can transform a business
  • Stakeholder management skills
  • Experience with building reports in Tableau, Looker or similar BI tool
  • Excellent working knowledge of relational databases
  • Experience with GCP and Airflow, or some other similar data warehouse and workflow management tool setup - a plus: working with Druid
  • Experience with documentation of data pipelines and data models
  • A go-getting, positive attitude, with the ability to get things done with minimal oversight
  • Track record of successfully collaborating cross-functionally and delivering high quality and impactful results

Some examples of the fun stuff we’d like your help with:

  • Rolling out Data Catalog for the analytics layer and helping us leverage it
  • Optimising our use of Looker’s data dictionary and rolling it out
  • Rethinking and rebuilding our data pipelines to support data usage across the company
  • And much more!

Desired capabilities (but not required):

  • Experience with Druid, other Google Cloud Platform tools such as Dataflow

We Offer:

  • "20% time" - be the most innovative you can be and work on anything you’d like!
  • The opportunity to be a key part of an exciting international growth journey
  • The opportunity to work with leading data engineering technologies including R, python, Google Cloud Platform, Airflow and AWS, and with leading data tools and emerging technologies
  • Opportunities to learn from the best and develop your career in a friendly, international, workplace
