The Role

As the FT’s product strategy matures, we believe we have the opportunity to accelerate the growth of our business.   At its core, this strategy is about diversifying our products and services to support professionals throughout their lifetimes.  By implication, the variety of different customer offerings that are being developed is growing. This has the potential to increase complexity especially where products interact with each other and our technology estate.  The board and the broader organisation is committed to this strategy as well as continued investment.  

Product and Technology as a department employs over 500 people with teams in London, Sofia Bulgaria and Manila.   This department encompasses traditional IT services, cyber security, data analysts, data scientists and product development teams.  The CTO organisation within Product and Technology has approximately 300 people.  Our tech estate is renewed, having migrated from data-centres into the cloud and replaced monoliths with microservices, and modern DEVOPS techniques. The CTO role reports directly to our CPTO (board member) and is part of the product and technology leadership team consisting of a Chief Data Officer and Chief Product Officer (amongst other roles).  The triumphant of these three roles are central to our success.

United by a passion for delivering compelling, smart journalism alongside an ambition to find growth fuelled by modern technology, The Financial Times are looking to hire a Chief Technology Officer to lead the core Technology organisation across our group. The right candidate will bring deep expertise to software development, quality, operational service and security of the products, platforms and services provided by the technology team, and the welfare and development of the technical team of talented engineers.

The successful candidate will be accountable for 

  • Build and execute an end-to-end scalable technology strategy to accelerate our ability create products and features
  • Enable our Product Strategy to release the long term growth embedded within it.
  • Ensure systems and software are resilient and embedded into our operations
  • Keeping our systems secure and aligned to CISO and Data governance policies
  • Build, inspire and lead a high performing, diverse team aligned to FT values.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will be accountable for the technical nature, quality, support, operational service and security of the products, platforms and services under your remit, as well as the welfare and development of the technology employees within your group.  

The specific duties and responsibilities for this role are as follows:

As the technology leader for the group, you will:

  • Define and execute a technology strategy to allow faster sustainable scalable product development and product experimentation.     
  • Identify opportunities to remove non-differentiating duplication within the teams, so the engineers can focus on innovating at the product level.  It should also incorporate best-practice for customer-facing digital product development at a global scale.
  • Identify opportunities and gaps within our current infrastructure and technology functions that require change and ensure there is a clear, well governed technology strategy.
  • Be aware of external market trends and best practices, to continuously drive both personal and team improvements.
  • Lead your engineering teams to create the software and services that support the development of the FT’s products to a high quality.
  • Embrace and help drive the use of platform engineering services, and the FT’s “Golden Path”.
  • Actively engage with key vendors to make sure we procure the right technology and make the best use of it
  • Build, continuously develop and lead a large team of high performing cross-functional engineers across multiple locations.
  • Ensure that our products and services are operationally resilient, performant and secure.
  • Play a lead role in driving the digital future of the Financial Times, leading technology innovation across the organisation.
  • Ensure the culture of technology reflects the values of FT - Trust, Integrity, Ambition, Inclusion, Curiosity and Subscriber focus, and continue to develop FT Technology as a brand within FT and outside FT. 

Additionally, as a senior leader within the organisation, you will:

  • As a member of the FT wide Senior Management Team, be a leading voice for Product and Technology and the opportunities product and technology represent.
  • Actively engage in the Technology Leadership Group (the CTO and their direct reports) to set the department strategy and engineering direction.
  • Work with PMO and Governance, to manage the technical operating costs top to bottom, from cradle to grave.  
  • Collaborate closely with the peers.  Be a real partner with the Chief Product Officer and the Chief Data Officer to align on technology capabilities and to deliver with success and continuous improvement, ensuring teams are aligned with agile and lean working methodologies. 

 

Skills and Experience

This role will be right for you, if you have:

  • Have experience and expertise in building sustainable scalable products for multiple organisations.
  • Strong, current, technical knowledge of developing and operating modern distributed software applications with a broad range of technology exposure across different channels.
  • The ability to think and act strategically, as well as recognising when to act tactically and operationally.  The ability to know when you need consistency and when you need independence.
  • The ability to form a clear compelling vision for the future incorporating diverse sources of input.
  • A proven track record of delivering innovative, well engineered solutions in a global digital product environment.
  • Experience working at scale in a complex organisation where customer/ partner relationships and main channels to market depend on technology platforms.
  • Experience building a large engineering team over multiple locations, for a sustained period and can demonstrate excellent leadership across technology domains like development, quality, support, architecture and integration
  • Experience in product development life cycles and working in a lean-agile way.
  • Active membership of the broader technology community with an understanding of current leading trends.
  • Inspirational people leadership who can engage and grow talent.
  • The understanding as to how to influence others (Peers, team and execs) and how to build collaborative, productive relationships with your peers.
  • The unrelenting positive energy to continuously drive change within your group and the wider business.
  • Experience managing senior stakeholders and presenting at board level with a strong track record in managing cross divisional relationships.
  • Strong customer focus and relationship building capabilities.
  • Strategic commercial awareness and prowess.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience of building and leading diverse teams with an inclusive culture.
