Compliance and Ethics - Internal Investigator (Hybrid-Flex)

As a valued contributor to our team, you will be responsible for conducting complex investigations into alleged employee misconduct and unethical business practices violating laws, regulations, or Fannie Mae’s Code of Conduct and corporate policies involving anti-corruption, fraud, EEO, retaliation, and other types of corporate misconduct.  

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE
The Compliance and Ethics - Internal Investigation - Advisor role will offer you the flexibility to make each day your own, while working alongside people who care so that you can deliver on the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive internal investigations of alleged employee misconduct involving violations of the law, regulations, Code of Conduct, and company policies, including conducting initial assessments, scoping, developing investigative plans, interviewing witnesses, reviewing documentary evidence, and analyzing findings. 
  • Draft concise and objective fact-based Investigation Reports and maintain well-organized and accurate case files.
  • Provide updates and written work product to the VP - Ethics & Investigations, the Chief Compliance & Ethics Officer, and other senior business leaders on investigative activities and results.
  • Advise the Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer on the appropriate after-investigation action.
  • Prioritize among multiple investigative tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining case cycle times and business needs.  
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with Legal, HR, internal audit, investigative partners, impacted business units, FHFA, and law enforcement.
  • Identify potential process or control gaps that may require remediation or indicate systemic breakdowns, trends, or emerging risks.
  • Serve as Fannie Mae’s expert witness in legal proceedings involving matters related to internal investigations.
  • Assist in the development of investigations policies and processes, including case intake, administration, and new case management system implementation.

THE EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

  • At least 6 years of experience conducting investigations at a government enforcement agency, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Excellent analytical capabilities as demonstrated by strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting an ethical culture and strong corporate values, professional discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive matters.

Desired Experiences

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the regulatory environment of the financial services industry.
  • At least 8 years of experience conducting investigations at a government enforcement agency, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Experience handling allegations related to financial reporting, fraud, data exfiltration, harassment, discrimination, conflicts of interest, retaliation, and other corporate policies. 
  • Good project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with case intake and implementing a third-party case management system.
