Summary

This person will join a writing team that communicates the values of PolicyGenius by creating helpful, authoritative, and engrossing content across a range of personal finance topics.

The role

As a Contributing Writer, you will work with the Content and Marketing team to produce content that increases engagement with various target audiences, as measured by multiple KPIs. In more qualitative terms, you'll contribute to our  GeniusCenter by producing content that consistently blows away the typical personal finance blog post or infographic. You'll help clarify what's historically been an opaque product category—insurance—so that consumers can make smarter financial planning decisions. You'll also write entertaining and knowledgeable pieces in other topic areas, including personal finance, behavioral economics, and day-to-day personal risk management. 

You feel equally at ease writing a 1700-word article or a 500-word blog post, and you're comfortable pitching story ideas as well as being assigned stories by an editor. You deliver drafts and revisions on time. You pick up on new concepts quickly, you think IKEA assembly instructions really aren't that difficult, and you would weirdly enjoy learning which diseases have the biggest impact on life insurance premiums—and then writing a post about the subject.

Responsibilities

  • Write blog posts and articles on a regular basis
  • Generate ideas for new content around assigned subjects
  • Perform independent primary and secondary research as needed
  • Develop a basic understanding of common insurance products
  • Incorporate SEO best practices and audience metrics into your work
  • Use humor competently

Requirements

  • 3+ years experience writing online or in print; you should be able to direct us to plenty of writing samples at third-party websites
  • Experience tailoring your writing for a specific demographic (for example, readers in their early thirties)
  • Ability to revise drafts and meet deadlines quickly and consistently
  • Strong interest in personal finance
  • Basic understanding of common blogging platforms

We'll favor candidates who can also demonstrate experience with any of the following:

  • Articles that are 1500 words or longer
  • Interviews
  • Content that's relevant to people entering the workforce, building their careers, or starting families 
  • "Explainer" pieces that break down a complicated topic into layperson's terms

Insurance industry experience is helpful but not required. It's more important that you have an engaging voice and the ability to become a subject matter expert on various topics as needed.
