About the Controller Role

The Controller, reporting to the CFO, will direct and oversee the Accounting Department for Metromile and supervise a team including functional responsibility over accounting including financial reporting, statutory reporting and compliance for our insurance products, investment accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. The Controller will ensure that Metromile has the systems, policies and procedures in place to support an efficient close process and works with our external auditors and regulators in conducting periodic audits. The Controller will work closely with all other departments in the organization. 

This position can be located in either our San Francisco or Tempe, AZ offices.

Your responsibilities will include:

Finance and Accounting Leadership:  

  • Running the monthly close process for both GAAP and statutory ledgers for multiple entities with a five-day close cycle.
  • Preparing and completing annual and quarterly NAIC financial statements (Yellow Books) and other statutory financial filings for Metromile.  Coordinate with any regulatory bodies and the Metromile Team on audits or issues related to the statutory filings.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Metromile’s financial status.
  • Financial system automation and enhancements and have US domestic and offshore captive reporting experience.
  • Coordinate external audits
  • Other duties as assigned.

Team Leadership:

  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.

  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.


Qualifications:

This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader with five to seven years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. Experience in the insurance industry and statutory reporting for the organization is required.

Other qualifications include:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the insurance industry in personal lines as it relates to accounting and compliance and reporting. This is required.
  • Minimum of a BA (in Accounting, Finance or Business related field); CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing financial reporting, analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and regulatory compliance.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Personal qualities of integrity and ethics
