About the Role:

Planet is seeking a creative, motivated and experienced Data Visualization Manager to lead our growing team in Berlin. We’re looking for a utility player capable of tackling all aspects of geospatial data visualization design and development using current Data Visualization best practices. Marketing’s Data Visualization Engineers are the “Super Users” of Planet data —possessing intimate knowledge of Planet’s products and services, and capable of extracting data from the pipeline of daily data and turning it into meaningful visual storytelling.

Our ideal candidate is passionate about Earth observation and satellite imagery, geospatial data, and mapping and can demonstrate how Planet’s data fits into existing remote sensing and analytics ecosystems. “What would you do if you had a daily view of the changes happening on Earth?” is a question that should excite and intrigue you.

We work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, striving to meet the demands of the press and a growing company while maintaining high standards. You’re often asked to provide the answers to questions that haven’t even been formulated. As the expert, you will be asked to exercise independent and critical thinking to solve what are often undefined problems.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Apply your expertise in remote sensing and geospatial technologies to extract data from the Planet Platform and turn it into meaningful and insightful imagery and data visualizations.
  • Own the lifecycle for imagery requests, from scoping and clarifying the incoming requests, to data extraction, processing and delivery.  On any given day, you may find yourself preparing imagery for a global news organization, applying your expertise to help visualize a customer use case, collaborating with your Marketing peers, or researching possible uses of Planet data.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Product & Marketing to help solve problems and create novel customer applications that reveal unique insights.
  • Deeply understand the geospatial data and analytics market, where Planet fits; identify opportunities for market expansion and ways to apply our data.
  • Support Planet’s go-to-market initiatives (product launches, solution development, partnerships, tradeshows) and drive execution of deliverables.
  • Lead a team of two Data Visualization Engineers and allocate team resources
  • Strategize long-term vision and establish best practices for Data Visualization

What You Bring:

  • Strong interest and passion for visual storytelling.
  • Familiarity with one or more geospatial libraries or applications: GDAL, QGIS, ArcGIS; Rasterio, Fiona, Pandas etc.
  • Experience with data visualization best practices
  • Knowledge of cartographic best practices
  • General familiarity with Adobe CC products
  • Leadership skills

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Comfortable in data visualization libraries such as (but not limited to) D3.js
  • Experience working in cloud based computing environments such as GCP / AWS
  • Design, typography, animation, and/or motion graphics skills
  • Experience writing in React and/or Webpack
  • Experience in Python or R, with familiarity of scientific computing/visualization libraries like numpy, matplotlib, ggplot2, etc.

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Additional company winter holidays and regular global days off
  • Remote friendly work environment and flexible working hours
  • Contribution to our growth by offering equity options for employees
  • Giving back to the community - one day per quarter for charitable work
  • Learning and Tuition Reimbursement
  • Regular hack-weeks and meetup events to exchange knowledge
  • Home office budget
  • Employee Resource Groups providing empowering spaces for connection and mentorship
