About the role

A highly creative, proactive Design Manager who has a strong background of both hands-on online and offline design, with strong technical knowledge is required to join our Marketing team based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.

An ideal candidate will have 5+ years in the e-Commerce / Marketing industry with a proven track record of management, planning, testing and implementation of e-Commerce best practices in a fast moving, results-oriented retail business.

The successful Design Manager will be reporting into the eCommerce Director and will have end to end responsibility of website design, CRM and offline design as well as management of the design team (currently three FTEs). The Design Manager will need to be proficient in front-end web technologies, including HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery.

We’re seeking a skilled communicator with a broad range of skills, a keen eye for detail, and a user-focused design mentality, confident leading and building a dynamic design team.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for managing the front-end user experience & content schedule for our UK business, working closely with Web Trading & wider E-Commerce team to provide creative marketing design and responsive web assets for ongoing campaigns
    • Overseeing and contributing to the designing, coding & implementation of all campaign changes and promotional pages
    • Responsible for working closely with the CRM team to deliver the email marketing strategy and optimizing email newsletter and trigger campaign layouts for conversion
    • End-to-end design & front-end coding for landing pages, microsites, email newsletters, affiliate/PPC banners
    • Oversee creation of all artwork and design requirements for Retail (merchandising / POS materials), to support our instore range of products
    • Handling design queries from the wider business and advising / fulfilling need accordingly
  • Managing the development of UI style guides and brand guidelines for the Buyagift and Red Letter Days brands, working closely with the Product Design Team to ensure optimal & consistent user experience
  • Direct and oversee the work of an in-house team of designers, (and at times) freelancers, and external agencies to ensure they work within specifications, helping to develop their skills
  • Implementing and updating processes to ensure efficient & smooth on-time delivery of all design work
  • Ensuring strong development of the design team, coaching and mentoring as required

And now a bit about you

  • 5+ years’ experience in a digital design role with a focus on B2C online eCommerce
  • Customer / User-focused mindset – strong understanding of UX/UI best practice
  • Experience of working within a fast pace, highly reactive trading industry
  • Management experience – providing constructive feedback and personal skills development for design teams
  • Excellent level competency in HTML, CSS, email newsletter coding, and strong understanding of Javascript and JQuery
  • Strong knowledge of Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign
  • Experience of Bootstrap framework

Desirable Skills

  • Prior experience working with developers within an agile / sprint-based environment
  • Animation skills / knowledge (CSS, SVG)
  • Experience with VSTS or TFS
  • Retouching / creative image manipulation skills
  • Any video editing ability
  • Experience defining/editing microcopy
  • Copywriting skills

The eCommerce Team is a team of trade planners, website merchandisers, designers, and conversion optimisation specialists.  Together they are accountable for ensuring the delivery of B2C sales and conversion targets with budgeted spend constraints.  The team co-ordinates across many different areas of the business, including online marketing and acquisition, buying, and IT.
