Developer Community Marketing Manager

San Francisco, United States

About Sentry

Bad software is everywhere, and we’re tired of it. Sentry is on a mission to help developers write better software faster, so we can get back to enjoying technology.

With more than $217 million in funding and 85,000 organizations that believe we’re on to something, we're building performance and error monitoring tools that help companies like Disney, Microsoft, and Atlassian spend less time fixing bugs and more time building products. If you like to selfishly build things that make your digital life better, come help us build the next generation of software monitoring tools.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced technical community marketing manager who will primarily focus on establishing impactful community programs with the support of developer advocates and technical content. This role will partner closely with advocates to ensure the reach of technical content is growing exponentially through consolidating content into packages for specific audiences or creating alternative forms of content to expand channel reach. In DevRel at Sentry, we focus on identifying the biggest challenges facing developers and identify workflow solutions that ideally include Sentry and Codecov.

The Developer Community Marketing Manager will drive the growth engine of the self-serve Sentry community by extending the reach of all relevant developer content that the Developer Advocates create and prioritize where the technical community engagement should be happening.

The largest benefit of this role is the multiplying effect of what the small group of advocates can do. This role will enable advocates to focus their effort on creating significantly more content, that is extremely relevant to where we want to prioritize our community growth (based on insights this role helps drive) and then syndicate the content in collaborative way with demand gen for sales pipeline, events, and product launches.

Key Outcomes & Objectives:

  • Increase audience reach: By end of 6 months, 2x the number of views of all content produced; existing or new
  • Increase top channel engagement: By end of 12 months:
    • 2x the engagement on at least 10 pieces of content
    • 2x the channel subscription of 2 core channels (e.g. YouTube and Sentry Answers)
    • Increase rate of newsletter subscription by 30% (more than current YOY rate)
  • Establish the engagement metrics that drive a smaller relative percentage increase in signups from organic sources to be defined once baseline set
  • By FY'24 year end, increase SDK community installs by 10% in at least 1 priority community

In this role you will

A successful candidate has a proven-track record of planning, delivering and reporting on a range of community campaigns, across various platforms and successful demonstration of building the influencer marketing strategy for a brand. This includes:

  • Define community health metrics and share of voice.
    • Report community health metrics to influence content and engagement direction for technical advocates.
  • Define and manage strategic initiatives to grow our community:
    • Own the tactics around where and how Sentry engages with the community through content (e.g. blog, YouTube, resource pages) and social media platforms.
    • Collaborate with advocates, marketing, creative, and support to maintain an authentic voice and sustainable responsiveness.
  • Create a program to engage with active community members and partners in a strategic way to highlight community members while reaching new audiences.
    • Keep track of results/benchmarks and reporting out of community partnerships, deciding which partnerships to deepen/lessen
  • Organize promotional launches from creating or sourcing content, building tracking, and partnering with the design team for production.
    • Extend the reach of content created for new platforms, mediums, and communities
    • Develop and execute the developer content pipeline pre- and post- product announcements
    • Create content “kits” that organizes and groups content from across Sentry to identify opportunity gaps
    • Help manage ongoing promotional reporting to internal stakeholders for OKRs, monthly check-ins, ad tweaks, etc.
  • Work cross functionally with demand generation, product marketing, events, and developer relations to help match content to our partner’s upcoming podcasts, newsletters, videos, and events.

You’ll love this job if you

  • You get excited about growing and maintaining a healthy community of technical people interested in learning together. You can see opportunities to engage developers in a way that is authentic and valuable both to them and the business.
  • You have a growth mindset. Even if you are not a developer yourself, you have a track record and are excited to dive into content and learn enough to be able to create pathways through the content for developers.
  • Are a prolific (and good) writer who understands how to tell a useful and relevant story in 30 words.
  • Get excited when you hear that your job is to do ⅓ of each: maintaining healthy communities and community programs, identifying narratives that tie together various pieces of content, and being a project manager across orgs to leverage multiple efforts to have the best impact to community members.

  • 8+ years developer community, developer relations, or developer marketing
  • Defined KPIs and metrics to measure the efficacy of developer advocacy focused initiatives and related platform areas
  • Has worked cross-functionally to organize promotional launches
  • Have a proven track record in reporting and analytics. Developer tools industry experience is a plus
  • Experience working closely with a software development process and/or familiarity for developer teams. Bonus points for any coding experience
  • Ability to identify opportunities for exponential growth of impressions on technical content and gaps in technical content across our community presence.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to project manage across multiple organizations including engineering, product, marketing, and content.
  • Proven track record of working across a distributed team
  • Stellar written and verbal communication skills

The base salary range (or hourly wage range, if applicable) that Sentry reasonably expects to pay for this position is $80,000 to $180,000.
