Director, Conference Marketing

Vox Media is looking for a Director of Conference Marketing to join its growing Vox Conference Team. This is the team that produces the highly regarded Code series of conferences (https://events.recode.net) and is now expanding its slate of editorially led conferences and events across Vox Media’s various brands. This person will join the Conference team, leading the development and execution of multi-channel event marketing strategies to drive awareness, engagement and consumer demand to meet established financial goals.

The Marketing Director will be responsible for developing and implementing effective, measurable direct marketing strategies, driving conference attendee acquisition/ticket sales while capitalizing on opportunities to raise brand awareness and increase market share of Vox conference products in a highly competitive industry.

The successful candidate will possess versatility in both leading and doing, as this role requires strategic thinking and masterful execution. S/he will have the ability to manage all elements of the direct marketing mix, integrating broad scale digital campaigns and PR with direct, personal outreach and offline efforts (including print, outdoor, radio and TV) as warranted by the individual event, audience and objectives.  S/he will also have a solid track record of building and managing teams, leveraging both internal and external resources to execute projects from start to finish - from strategy development through implementation - adapting tactics as needed to meet established financial goals.  This positions reports to the VP Conferences & Special Projects.

Responsibilities:

  •  Develop multichannel event marketing and audience development strategies to drive awareness, demand generation, sponsor opportunities and ticket sales to meet financial goals
  •  Articulate event positioning and “go to market” and audience development strategies for new event concepts working in collaboration with colleagues on the conference team and stakeholders across the company, including Vox Media’s Brand Identity, Brand Partnership and Communications teams
  •  Develop, deploy and analyze campaigns through a variety of channels including digital advertising, direct email marketing, SEM, Social Media marketing and other digital and offline channels as warranted by the event concept/audience
  • Work collaboratively with teams across the company to create appealing campaigns, communicating winning marketing concepts through well written copy and smart, impactful design
  • Work internally to monitor digital campaigns and collect metrics to calculate ROI, implement a test-and-measure approach to continuous strategy and process improvements to ensure goals are met
  • Management of marketing budget: estimating/contracting outside resources/tracking invoices against budget/project documentation/approvals
  •  Development of a  paid marketing strategy, by event, that may include  but isn’t limited to SEM, Social Media, list rentals and external display advertising
  • Identify, develop and maintain marketing partnerships to drive audience development and branding efforts by project/event   
  •  Maintain knowledge of current trends and digital marketing strategies as they evolve

 

Required Skills/Experience:

  •  5+ years professional experience working in field, direct experience/expertise in direct response, event and brand marketing
  •  Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or Advertising
  •  Proven ability to manage multiple, often competing, priorities in fast-paced environment and work to ensure the highest quality deliverables
  •  Experience managing complex projects across functional departments, with experience managing both internal and external resources
  •  Highly organized, creative and critical thinker with superior problem solving skills
  •  3+ years of budget responsibility; to include development, management, reporting
  •  3+ years managing and mentoring teams with a focus on people development
  •  Stellar interpersonal, written and spoken communication, across all organizational levels
  • 2+ years professional experience in digital media, working collaboratively with creative, production, editorial and sales teams

  •  Experience with media or technology company preferred
