Hey there! We’re Morning Brew - a bunch of smart, dedicated people focused on disrupting and redefining the traditional business news landscape. Also, we’re nice and have great swag. We are looking for a Director of Engineering to join our team.
While this position is based in New York City, office colocation will be contingent on stay-at-home orders; until then, all employees are working remotely.
It's our goal to make the business world more engaging for the modern business leader. How? By giving our audience the news they need in a way they actually enjoy. Across newsletters, podcasts, social, and (soon) even more, we're building something special. Want in? Read on.
Morning Brew is looking for an experienced director of engineering to lead the product engineering team. You will be responsible for architecting, implementing, and maintaining functionality across all of Morning Brew’s applications, managing the existing group of engineers, and growing the team through internal career development and external hiring. Our core internal products are our CMS and our advertising-approval tool/ad serving tool; our user-facing products are 7+ newsletters and a single website (that we’re looking to relaunch in 2021). We work with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, React, GraphQL, etc. This role sits within Product and reports to the VP, Product.
Here’s what you’ll be working on:
◼ Mentor and manage the engineering team (currently 3+):
· Help the team prioritize, develop, and ship the most impactful features to both our internal team and rapidly growing audience
· Nurture the engineering culture by developing the skills and talents of junior and mid-level engineers
· Implement best-practice software engineering methods
· Provide guidance, direction, and support
◼ Lead, own, and drive projects from start to completion, including system architecture design (especially for a CMS and databases), code design, development, and integration
· Lead the engineering effort to relaunch our brands across email and web
◼ Deeply collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to advise on the best solutions to achieving our business objectives. This means you should have a propensity to over communicate.
◼ Active participation in growing/hiring for the engineering team
◼ Review code on GitHub to highlight risks, recommend best practices
◼ Consider how proposed solutions will affect the security, stability, performance, usability, and accessibility of the end product
What makes you qualified?
◼ 8+ years engineering experience (ideally, some in media)
◼ 4+ years managing engineers, with a genuine interest in teaching your team “how to fish”
◼ Strong problem-solving abilities, with a preference on sharing your decision making process with others
◼ Extensive experience working collaboratively with designers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders across an organization
◼ Strong foundation in modern web development frameworks and an expert in Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL
◼ Deeply familiar with relational databases and database design best practices — we use PostgreSQL
◼ Comfortable working in a fast-paced, startup environment
◼ Passionate about creating approachable, innovative, user-first experiences
◼ Excited to join a fast growing company and shape the future of the product organization
While being surrounded by a bunch of cool people who look great in crewnecks is its own reward, we thought we'd sweeten the pot even more with some perks:
