We're looking for people to join our engineering team in building upon this success, as we grow to play a key part in redefining the future of business banking with next generation financial tools and products.

As the Director of Platform Engineering for OakNorth, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technological foundation that powers our financial products and services. You will lead a team of 8 passionate engineers across our UK & India offices. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver platform solutions that meet the highest standards of performance, security, and compliance. 
 
The term “You build it, you run it” will resonate strongly with you and you enjoy enabling engineering teams to self-serve. We use AWS and Terraform among other tools; we have a strong focus on end-to-end automation as the primary tool for ensuring our code and infrastructure are robust. 
  
Like everywhere we have some legacy components, and we are in the process of rewriting these to follow cloud best practice. 

The role 👋

  • Leadership: Provide strategic leadership and mentorship to the platform engineering team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability. Inspire and empower team members to achieve excellence in platform development. 
  • Platform Strategy: Define and execute the platform engineering strategy in alignment with the company's business objectives and regulatory requirements. Develop a roadmap for platform evolution, identifying key initiatives and priorities to enhance scalability, reliability, and security. 
  • Architecture and Design: Lead the architectural design of our platform infrastructure, ensuring it meets the unique challenges and requirements of the banking industry. Implement best practices for data security, compliance, and risk management. 
  • Technology Stack: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in fintech and financial services. Evaluate and select appropriate technologies and tools to optimise platform performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. 
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with product management, engineering, security, risk and compliance teams to define platform requirements, prioritise features, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality solutions. Foster strong cross-functional partnerships to drive alignment and synergy across teams. 
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that platform solutions adhere to relevant regulatory requirements, including data protection regulations, financial industry standards, and cybersecurity best practices. Work closely with compliance and legal teams to mitigate regulatory risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations. 
  • Operational Resilience: Lead efforts to maintain system reliability, mitigate risks and enhance disaster recovery capabilities. Coordinate testing and drive improvements across the business. 
  • Quality Assurance: Establish and enforce data-driven quality standards and best practices for software development, including code reviews, automated testing, and performance monitoring. Implement robust observability systems to enable proactive detection and mitigation of issues. 
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimise development processes, tools, and methodologies. Foster a culture of learning and knowledge sharing amongst the engineering team.

Our story 
OakNorth Bank was built on the foundations of frustrations with old-school banking. In 2005, when our founders tried to get capital for their data analytics company, the computer said ‘no’. Unfortunately, all major banks in the UK were using the same computer – and it was broken.  
Why was it so difficult for a profitable business with impressive cashflow, retained clients, and clear commercial success to get a loan?  
The industry was backward-looking and too focused on historic financials, rather than future potential.
