About the job:

The Director of Software Engineering, Global Network leads a highly specialized team responsible for designing and operating Twilio’s global network, both physical and software-defined. This leader must possess extensive knowledge of networking hardware, software, and services marketplaces including region-specific solutions.  This role requires comfort and accountability within a fast paced, flexible environment. This leader is a key player in the strategic planning processes for Twilio’s Platform Engineering organization, acting as one of the lead advisors to the Vice President of Engineering. 

Areas of emphasis include software-defined networking, network configuration management/automation, team leadership and the execution of engineering activities associated with development, staging, and production environments while ensuring our networks are fully operational, scalable, supportable and sustainable.

The Director of Software Engineering, Global Network is responsible for developing and cultivating relationships with Twilio architects, tech leads, product and engineering managers to determine current and future enterprise network needs and service offerings, ensuring that the organization's needs are met on time and within budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and guide a highly technical team of network and software engineers.
  • Develop and deploy network infrastructure plans, both public cloud and O&O.
  • Work with engineering leaders to assure investments in networks are appropriate, compatible with large-scale distributed systems best practices, and can scale and adapt as the business needs evolve.
  • Work with Platform Engineering leadership to develop short and long-term strategic departmental plans that support overall business and technology strategies.
  • Manage a staff of engineers and serve as the team liaison for the hiring process, work allocation, scheduling, training, professional development and performance evaluation.
  • Support projects end-to-end initiated by various clients (internal/external) and business units including new project and client launches, internal technology efforts, and across public cloud and O&O infrastructure.
  • Establish and meet service level agreements for performance, uptime and issue response.

Requirements:

  • Director level experience in a Network Engineering and Software Engineering-related position.
  • Experience leading senior engineers supporting a global cloud architecture.
  • 10+ years related work experience in planning, design, implementation, and engineering supporting large enterprise data networks.
  • Demonstrated experience with telecommunications, real-time communications and/or content delivery network design with a deep understanding of latency-sensitive workloads.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of networking architectures.
  • Demonstrated experience working well under pressure while delivering quality results.
  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Business, Information Management, or a related field; or the equivalent in education and work experience.

Bonus points:

  • Experience designing, deploying, and supporting software-defined networks for latency-sensitive services: voice, messaging, video.
  • Experience building network solutions on public clouds: AWS, Google, Azure.
  • Masters in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Business, Information Management, or a related field.
