OpenAI is hiring a

Director of Technical Accounting and Reporting

San Francisco, United States

About the Team

OpenAI’s mission is to build safe artificial general intelligence (AGI) which benefits all of humanity. This long-term undertaking brings the world’s best scientists, engineers, and business professionals together under one organization to accomplish this.

We're building the most advanced AI models and platforms, making it easy for developers and customers to benefit from AI via ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. Our API also provides developers access to Codex – a model that translates natural language into code – and we partnered with GitHub to create an AI pair programmer, Copilot. We're working to bring other research efforts into the API such as DALL-E 2 (our text to image generator) and CLIP (our state-of-the-art image classifier).

OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission. The Director of Technical Accounting and Reporting works with senior finance leadership to ensure the integrity of our numbers and is a financial linchpin for the organization.

About the Role

The Director of Technical Accounting and Reporting will lead the company’s technical accounting function and provide guidance to senior finance leadership on complex accounting matters and transactions. This role will report to the Vice President of Finance and work closely with the COO, General Counsel, tax team, and other cross-functional departments to ensure that the financial statements accurately reflect the company’s financial position and results of operations.

This strategic, yet hands-on role requires deep subject matter expertise and the ability to reason through complex issues. You will be a key player in driving the financial success of the organization by building – and sustaining – a world-class technical accounting function.

This role is based in our San Francisco HQ. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee the preparation and presentation of financial statements in accordance with US GAAP
  • Lead the company’s technical accounting function and provide guidance to senior leadership on complex accounting matters and transactions
  • Work with the VP Finance to present and deliver financial reporting to investors and key stakeholders
  • Work cross-functionally with Strategic Finance, Legal, HR, Tax, and Product to ensure that the financial statements accurately reflect the company’s financial position and results of operations
  • Monitor and maintain the company’s accounting policies and procedures and partner with finance stakeholders to operationalize them
  • Mentor and train accounting team members on technical accounting topics that impact their subject areas
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and provide support during audits

We’re looking for a blend of:

  • Progressive experience in technical accounting advisory at some combination of public accounting firms or late-stage technology startups, with exposure to complex deals and novel transactions
  • Exemplary interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to land complex concepts across multiple audiences
  • Best-in-class attention to detail and unwavering commitment to accuracy
  • CPA or CA with a mastery of US GAAP and financial reporting requirements for various types of legal entities

You might thrive in this role if:

  • You’re an enthusiastic self-starter. You thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and expect to fully own your function. You take ownership of your work and believe that a job not done well is a job not done.
  • You’re a phenomenal teammate. You’re a strong communicator who can explain complex topics with ease, in any format. You intuitively understand the importance of keeping everyone in the loop, and you take proactive measures to do so. You’re intellectually honest.
  • You’re excited about new challenges. You don’t have the answers to every question up front, but the process of solving them invigorates you. Novel issues requiring multidimensional knowledge excite you.
  • You reason from first principles. You break down complicated problems into basic elements and then reassemble them from the ground up, always keeping the spirit of the transaction in mind and ensuring it’s captured in your analysis and conclusions.
  • You’re passionate about technology and artificial intelligence.
