Responsibilities 

The Director of Public Affairs, will be a senior member of the Corporate Communications Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating the strategy for and the hands-on execution of DraftKings’ public affairs programs.

The Public Affairs Director will work to protect and enhance the company's reputation by running communications programs related to policy, legislative and legal issues. Specifically, the successful candidate will develop strategic campaigns and programs that reduce the company's reputational risk by:

  1. Building trust in the organization among critical stakeholders
  2. Removing perceptual barriers to key business initiatives/strategies
  3. Creating a favorable environment in Washington, DC and state capitals

The successful candidate will also help enhance the company’s corporate reputation and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders such as NGOs, consumer groups, think tanks, academics and customers.

This position supervises a Public Affairs Manager and reports to the Sr. VP of Corporate Communications.

 

Media Relations

  • Run best-in-class communications programs to generate proactive media coverage.
  • Design and execute outreach programs to capital reporters and influential editorial boards to share DK’s view of daily fantasy sports.
  • Serve as spokesperson on public policy and reputational issues.
  • Initiate and manage editorial calendar with long lead times.
  • Possess journalist-quality writing skills to create PowerPoint plans, news releases, fact sheets, talking points, speeches, op-eds, blog posts, social media posts and executive briefing documents.
  • Help manage public relations agencies.

 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Manage key relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with Government Relations team and outside consultants to develop public affairs support for their legislative and regulatory initiatives.
  • Run complex programs and events.
  • Foster and manage relationships with NGOs (such as consumer groups) and serve as liaison between those groups and other DraftKings departments.

 

Qualifications

  • 12+ years total experience directly in public affairs.
  • Superb writing and editing skills.
  • Head-of-the-class media relations strategizer.
  • Excellent public speaker and comfortable giving media interviews in all mediums.
  • Experience blending traditional communications tactics with social media.
  • Digital communications understanding and experience, including metrics analysis.
  • Experience managing multiple PR agency relationships.
  • Exceptional project management skills and the ability to structure and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and drive to completion, often with short deadlines.
  • Approaches everything with drive, urgency and energy. Ability to work well under pressure, achieve results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, and to thrive under deadlines.
  • Willingness to roll-up sleeves and get the work, big and small, done.
  • Experience on political campaigns or within government a big plus.
  • Ability to fluently speak additional languages a plus.
