Engineering Operations Manager - Leadership


Timescale is building the world’s next great database company on top of industry-standard PostgreSQL and we need your help!  We are hiring an Engineering Operations Manager to assist the VP of Engineering scale the engineering organization. This position reports directly to the VP of Engineering. TimescaleDB is our open source Postgres extension that enables SQL to be scalable for time series data, providing automatic partitioning across time and space as well as full SQL support.

What you’ll do

As the Engineering Operations Manager you will work closely with the VP of Engineering and product and engineering directors to guide execution in the product engineering organization.  In this role, you will be a versatile member of the engineering leadership team, working on everything from strategic direction to tactical implementation. You will use your strong communication skills to drive collaboration across groups and help to identify blockers and dependencies. You will govern our planning and execution cycle to help our teams execute with high throughput.  

Because we are a remote company, effective offsite planning is critical for alignment and morale.  This role will plan offsites, collecting outcomes, building agendas and ensuring team members can attend.  You will help ensure our meetings are successful by being an active participant in discussions and recording outcomes for future reference.

You will assist the VP of Engineering with daily tasks in running the organization. You will help assess risk around decisions and provide additional information from other departments (legal, people, etc) when needed.

  • Strong project management skills.   You can get the right people in a room, figure out a plan and ensure it is executed and tracked appropriately.
  • The ability to take on tasks, big and small, as needed.  You’re not a “not my job” type of person.
  • Strong technical expertise.  You don’t have to be a software engineer, but you should know how software gets built and where pitfalls may lie.
  • A strong sense of urgency and responsibility.  We’re a startup.  We hustle and get things done for our customers.
  • The confidence to disagree.  You disagree and commit when necessary.  You bring feedback directly to the people who need it.  
  • The ability to offsites for small and large groups.


  • Work with the engineering leadership team to plan and prioritize engineering activities
  • Work across teams to identify and satisfy dependencies
  • Plan offsites and other events
  • Record weekly execution metrics from product teams.  Identify blockers and identify collaboration areas with our teams to resolve them.
  • Plan the bi-weekly Engineering All Hands meeting
  • Plan and execute special projects, like compliance or other one-offs
  • Gather information from our teams for the weekly engineering report
  • Be a team player and a unifier of ideas, an enabler of collaboration, a force of value delivery for our customers.  

Required Experience

  • B.S. or equivalent experience in a technical field, ideally software engineering.  
  • A degree in technical project/program management or equivalent experience is also acceptable.
  • Proven record of planning and coordinating large, off-site events
  • Experience working on a fully-remote, global team across many time zones

Preferred Experience

  • Proven results in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Technical understanding of DBaaS, PostgreSQL, and cloud-native engineering
