Fermentation Lab Technician

Zymergen has an exciting opportunity for a Lab Technician in our Fermentation department. In this role you will support the fermentation process through preparation of glassware, materials, media and equipment. Our Lab Technician will work alongside the Fermentation team to understand workflows and execute support activities. Additionally, our Lab Technician will participate in efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of protocols. We are looking for a Lab Technician who is thoughtful, meticulous, well-organized, energetic, collaborative, and fully engaged in assisting in the execution of any and all workflows assigned.

 

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities

Immediate responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, assemble, clean and sterilize glassware and fermentation tanks
  • Prepare media, reagents and materials
  • Organizing and maintaining inventory of glassware and supplies throughout the lab
  • Performing pre-operational cleaning and maintenance of general laboratory equipment
  • Assisting in support tasks and projects as required to keep the lab organized and operating efficiently
  • Comply with all company, environmental, health and safety policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively between team and customers
  • Identify quality issues and escalate as needed

 

Qualifications/Experience

We prefer candidates with greater than 2 years of relevant experience working in manufacturing or laboratory environments. We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Experience working within a fermentation Lab operations setting is preferred
  • Familiarity with a variety of bench scale fermentation units preferred (including those from Sartorius, DASGIP, AMBR)
  • Experience with tube welding a plus
  • Experience preparing media, reagents and materials.
  • Experience working under deadlines, shifting schedules and good time management skills. 
  • Understanding of good laboratory practices including aseptic techniques, sample handling, and good record keeping
  • Understanding of sterile technique, sterilization and common lab equipment including autoclaves, glasswashers, sterile hoods

 

Additional Details

This position requires the successful candidate to frequently move from one building to another and to move from one laboratory to another.

This position requires the individual to move and transport up to 50 lbs of samples and materials between buildings and laboratories. 

This position requires the ability to submit to medical screening to demonstrate a fitness for duty requiring exposure to certain chemical and biological substances

The position may require work outside of the normal business hours (M-F 9-6) including weekends and holidays. Our facilities are located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
