Finance Director

BuzzFeed is looking for a smart, detail-oriented person to serve as Finance Director. This person will be responsible for supporting the company’s FP&A requirements, with a departmental focus on the Sales & Marketing and Editorial teams.

In addition, this role will provide support with corporate finance initiatives such as M&A. This role will have one direct report and so management experience is required. Responsibilities include updating the departmental budget/forecast model, tracking key business operational metrics, and producing monthly financial/operational reports. Beyond the traditional FP&A needs, this role requires strong organizational skills to help manage the department's expenses, guide discussions with senior managers across the department, and evaluate/implement strategic operational projects for top management. This is a dynamic role that serves the corporate finance group while being embedded in operations. Overall, the focus is on improving the efficiency, work flow and economics of the group. This person will report to the Senior Director of Finance (Los Angeles) and will routinely interface with BuzzFeed’s top management and department heads.

This is an ideal position for an individual who has gained strong analytical and management experience in a large corporation’s finance department and now seeks to apply those skills to a fast-growing entrepreneurial company. Strong quantitative and Excel financial modeling skills are a must. The ideal candidate must be comfortable in a dynamic start-up environment, brings energy and passion to everything he or she does, and will not be afraid to roll up his or her sleeves to tackle challenging analytical assignments.

  • Management of one direct report
  • Provide financial support to corporate finance group
  • Update the department financial model and manage the forecasting process
  • Meet with department’s senior manager heads monthly to develop and update budgets
  • Track and analyze key business drivers, competitive environment, trends and operating metrics
  • Work with Senior Director to develop insightful analyses/KPIs for department heads and top management on critical business projects


  • B.A. degree
  • 6-10 years of work experience at Big 4 accounting firm and/or in a corporation’s finance department (media/tech preference)
  • Experience managing personnel
  • Exposure to M&A is a plus
  • Mastery of Microsoft Excel, with proven strong financial modeling skills**
  • High level of attention to detail, excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize demands and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to thrive and be highly effective in a fast-paced and fluid environment
