What You Will Do

Ocado has built and operates a series of large, automated Fulfilment Centers (FC’s) to satisfy increasing demand from customers for a high-quality and reliable delivery service for online grocery orders. Ocado has signed deals with a number of international Grocers to provide them with the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) to manage their automated FC’s and supporting head office software to provide a leading online grocery business.

As a result of our growth, a Construction and Installation team has been established to support our business and develop the capabilities needed to build and install the Ocado Smart Platform for clients across the world. As Ocado transforms there is a growing need to support multiple complex projects across new styles and sizes of FCs. 

We are looking for a General Manager of Construction and Installation for North America, who will be accountable for the simultaneous delivery of 5-15 OSP Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Installations across client sites in the USA and Canada.

Day-to-day responsibilities could include:

• Leadership & management of a group of 10+ Lead Engineering Project Managers, Preconstruction/Purchasing Managers and Safety coordinators. This team should be able to install, commission and fault find complex Material Handling Equipment against challenging budgets of $50M per project.
• Assist in planning and scheduling a portfolio of FC’s for delivery within 12-15 months with multiple stakeholders and their dependencies 
• Support recruitment and on-boarding of new FC install delivery teams to work in USA and Canada while ensuring local competencies and qualifications meet in-country regulation.
• Ensure that significant adverse events are investigated, and that management introduce controls to reduce any risks
• Set the standard for the plan, design and management of construction sites in-country for Ocado MHE, dovetailing with clients and principal contractors, while being responsible for all Ocado construction safety in-country.
• Support the establishment of a 5 year installation regional strategy, incorporating framework contract orders, standardization of tenders and contracts.
• Tender and negotiate multi-million dollar contracts with VP-level and above contacts, incorporating high labor content and technical difficulty against a challenging budget target.
• Support teams to remain agile and responsive to last-minute changes and still make go live dates also track or shadow client plans and anticipate issues.
• Present and summarize technical issues and the commercial options available to the Vice President of Construction & Installation for escalations and decisions.
• Responsibility for the team’s adherence to national/local legislation for construction/engineering compliance.
• Ensure UK machinery design standards meet the country/state specific requirements where required. Ability to negotiate with local authorities and obtain approvals.
• Responsible for MHE risk identification, mitigation and documentation. This requires anticipating engineering challenges and the need to manage and consult mitigations/issues (e.g. Prototypes, Engineering compliance etc.).
• Ensure each site delivers installation projects against budget. Formally present variations, mitigations to the business at regular intervals and reforecast new budgets where required.
• Collaborate and enforce standards and processes to maximize efficiency and optimize costs.

Who You Are

To qualify for this position, you should meet the following requirements:

Minimum:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field  
• 12+ years experience managing significant construction projects
• Familiar with standard PPM tools (Microsoft Project or Primavera 6 Planning Tool etc) applied to complex multi-million dollar projects
• Experience managing remote technical teams of 20 people or more
• Aptitude to lead on technical and commercial discussions with internal and external parties
• Ability to communicate strategy to senior stakeholders
• Ability to navigate common drawing packages (e.g. Autocad, Revit, Google SketchUp, EPlan + Solidworks etc.)
• Ability to negotiate USA and Canadian legal trade contracts with Legal team and suppliers
• Ability to manage multiple project budgets in the multi million dollar range each 

Preferred (in addition to minimum):

• Masters Degree in Engineering or related field
• OSHA 30 Certificate
• PMP or Equivalent 
• Knowledge of continuous improvement approaches (Lean 6 sigma, etc.)

This position will be fully remote with a minimum of 25% travel.
