Head of Brand Design

Picture an emerging brand that will one day represent the best possible future of work. Imagine HR that transforms work into a community, payroll that brings everyone peace of mind, and benefits that help people plan for a better future. Gusto aspires to break all the rules in B2B marketing playbooks and create a brand that people genuinely, unabashedly love – in industries that currently engender feelings of boredom, fear, or frustration. So far, our product and customer experience give us the platform to achieve this break-out success, and we seek to build the marketing excellence to bring that customer value to the market at scale. In this role, you will craft an experience that millions of employers and employees worldwide look forward to interacting with every day.

Gusto is seeking an emerging leader and experienced designer to own Gusto’s creative strategy and brand visualization and skyrocket with us. Your team will create experiences across multiple mediums including visual, web, print, and video to communicate Gusto’s platform, mission, and values. You’ll be working with a group of world-class visual and web designers.

This role requires a careful balance of visionary design strategy, brand strategy development and a metrics-driven, business-savvy approach to design and production. We’re looking for someone who can inspire a team of designers to build and execute the Gusto brand vision, and design functional experiences that deliver on business objectives.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own design direction and strategy for all aspects of the prospective customer experience. This includes Gusto’s brand design, interactive design, corporate website, marketing materials, online and offline advertising, events, and more.
  • Contribute to Gusto’s overall brand, marketing, and product design strategies.
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor a team of visual and interactive designers.
  • Work cross-functionally to build experiences that keep prospective customers highly engaged, fully informed, and constantly delighted.
  • Bring empathy and enthusiasm to everything that you build.
  • Translate business goals into clear priorities and projects for the team
  • Prioritize, guide, and champion new design projects.
  • Define and build a living brand that stands out from other companies.
  • Optimize the customer experience by constantly A/B testing and taking advantage of usage data to learn and iterate

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • An incredible storyteller and a strong advocate for functional design.
  • 8+ years experience in interactive marketing and advertising.
  • 2+ years of experience leading a creative team.
  • A love for improving workflows, including creative briefs, 1x1 meetings, team presentations, and design critiques.
  • Ability to make extremely complex topics simple, engaging, and fun.
  • Strong portfolio of recent work spanning multiple mediums, with examples of data-driven decisions.
  • Experience managing complex digital campaigns for top tier brands.
  • A list of designers who truly enjoyed working for you—we’d love to hear from your amazing references.

Bonus points if you:

  • Have experience with design for financial services.
  • Have experience in demand generation, A/B testing, or user research.
  • Are passionate about helping small business owners – especially if you know one or were one in a past life.
