The Role

The Head of Product Design, reporting to the Chief Product Officer, will be responsible for leading the product and UX design function at Foundry, including organising, growing, and mentoring the UX design teams and being the driving force within the product management function for user-centred design practises and design thinking.

As Head of Product Design, you will play a key role in ensuring development efforts deliver intuitive experiences for users of Foundry’s products. This role requires enthusiasm for great design, experience in designing for highly technical software applications, ideally in the creative tools space, along with a passion for coaching and leading teams of designers. The Head of Product Design will leverage deep experience applying design principles and processes. They will take a creative approach to user research and have an entrepreneurial attitude.

This is an influential role, supporting product design across all of Foundry’s products and leading the wider product design conversation across the organisation and externally, supporting Foundry’s goal of enabling artists to solve complex visualization challenges, and turn their incredible ideas into reality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that our product designs are always customer-centric and balance simplicity with the complexity of the work our users complete.
  • Drive the design process forward, developing and implementing best practices, and driving user research, testing and experimentation.
  • Coaching and upskilling our product design teams; mentoring and managing a team of designers, including Lead Designers with their own teams.
  • Empowering designers and design teams to take responsibility for their own research and offer guidance in their product design direction.
  • Ensuring design thinking is front-of-mind throughout the product development process, advocating for the value of product design across the wider business.
  • Collaborating with product leaders and heads of engineering to enable our product teams to deliver great work at speed.
  • Developing a deep understanding of artist needs and expectations, as well as an understanding of the business aspects of the products we build and the needs of the wider VFX, animation and digital design industries.
  • Synthesise UX research results and feedback into actionable recommendations that inform the product strategy, alongside the senior product leaders and heads of engineering.
  • Lead delivery of cross-product and design-focused initiatives.
  • Monitor and address the accumulation of UX debt and design language inconsistencies, seeking to develop consistency where appropriate.


  • Degree in User Experience Design, Product Design, Visual Effects, or related field
  • Experience leading design teams at user-focused technology, media or enterprise companies.
  • Hands on experience in product and UX design, ideally working on creative software in a technical industry.
  • Experience working on digital design or VFX tools a plus, passion for the creative industries and enabling artists is a requirement.
  • Demonstrable experience applying user-centered design methodologies and usability principles in successful software products.
  • Track record of managing multiple projects and teams at once, ideally in a multi-product environment.
  • Ability to clearly prioritize & manage work to critical project timelines, and build the team structure and processes that support delivery of complex projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrable success presenting in a clear and compelling manner to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong influencing and relationship skills, ability to quickly build rapport and establish credibility.
  • Confident & flexible with the ability to find clarity in ambiguous situations
  • UK Based or in a London-friendly timezone in the US, EU or Canada


  • Additional knowledge of Foundry’s tools and competitors e.g Nuke, Modo, Katana, Maya, After Effects, Resolve
  • Ability to travel to the US and UK as needed (max 2 weeks per year)
