Head of R&D

The Head of R&D at Sprig manages our dish catalog from concept to execution, ensuring a high quality customer experience in every location.

This candidate must have a culinary background – and be a systems and organizational expert. The R&D requirements are rigorous with incredibly fast turnarounds. The leader must be a proven people-developer, coach, agile manager, and strategic thinker.


Leadership and People Development
-Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the entire R&D organization achieves business results
-Manages direct reports via coaching, mentoring, training and ongoing feedback to drive individual results and develop leadership skills and influence
-Leads the development and implementation of strategy and vision for R&D team
-Adjusts quickly to evolving business needs
-Directs and oversees new menu items and supplemental programs to ensure achievement of business objectives
-Builds strong relationships with leaders in other organization including design, customer research, and operations

Planning and Execution
-Prepares, communicates and educates the team on changes in policies and practices within the organization
-Plans and manages business unit and department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives
-Develops annual operating plan and budget, and quarterly forecast updates
-Uses business intelligence information to evaluate success and refocus the team
-Leads team to develop and test new menu items and programs
-Able to design R&D processes that support rapid innovation and ongoing output in a fast-paced environment

Business Requirements
-Defines vision for new meal/concept innovation by sizing revenue opportunity, defining unique customer & brand proposition, assessing competitive landscape, and determining operational feasibility
-Sells vision, business model, and development plan to senior leaders, including regional business leadership
-Ensure "toolkits" are developed to include full program elements such as vision, insights, executional details to ensure successful transition to implementation team      

Innovation and Customer Focus
-Builds internal stakeholder knowledge and understanding of consumer insights and emerging trends around innovation opportunity areas
-Leads identification of game-changing new product ideas to take our brands to the next level.Plans and facilitates dynamic work sessions that inspire innovative ideas, agile iteration, and effective decision making
-Identifies and experiments with new techniques and models for research, product design, testing, and distribution to build innovation best practices and expand the company’s toolkit
-Collaborate with all departments on design and development of new product and packaging prototypes
-Collaborate with Brand Marketing partners to define positioning for new products
-Oversee innovation projects through the internal gate process, monitoring and adjusting as needed to ready innovation projects for commercialization

-Leadership experience in an R&D organization (4 years)
-Experience creating and leading high functioning teams (8 years)
-Experience in a large scale retail, restaurant or QSR (4 years)
-Operations experience preferred
