FutureLearn uses design, technology and partnerships to create enjoyable, credible and flexible online courses and degrees that improve working lives. It partners with over a quarter of the world’s top universities, as well as organisations such as Accenture, the British Council, CIPD, Raspberry Pi and Health Education England (HEE). It is also the online platform underpinning government-backed initiatives to address skills gaps such as The Institute of Coding and the National Centre for Computing Education.


Since Monash University and the University of Auckland joined FutureLearn as founding partners, the company has expanded its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and now three partners, Deakin University, Murdoch University and The University of Newcastle Australia now deliver full degrees via FutureLearn.

Following this growth, now is the time for FutureLearn to have full-time staff based in Australia. This role will join a Senior Partnership Manager already based in Melbourne.

The Key Account Director, Australia is a major partnership development role for FutureLearn, operating out of the Melbourne, Australia.

Working with the Educational Partnerships team based in the UK, you will be responsible for developing and managing the strategic-level relationships with universities across Australian and New Zealand, and promoting and supporting marketing and recruitment services delivered to Australian/NZ universities.

To be successful, you will need to be skilled at leading strategic discussions with senior figures in universities on digital strategy in education and advising on ways to address their challenges in collaboration with FutureLearn, taking advantage of FutureLearn’s distinctive capabilities. You must be adept at identifying commercial opportunities based on market insight and how to continuously improve the commercial performance of courses.

You will be responsible for demonstrating FutureLearn's credentials as the social online learning market leader to new prospects, and managing all stages of the partner recruitment process. You will also represent FutureLearn in key HE events across the Australia and New Zealand.

Finally, you will support the development of a portfolio of career-relevant, marketable online degrees and micro-credential courses, which uphold FutureLearn’s pedagogical principles. As an individual, you will be interested in the potential of online education at scale. You love working in partnership with universities and thrive on developing sincere collaboration. You relish the challenges of working with a variety of partners - some of whom have ambitions to be digital pioneers while others may still be trying to understand the possibilities that online education on a massive scale can provide.

The role reports to the Managing Director of Universities and Education Partnerships. It will also work closely with other Partnership Managers and Key Account Managers, the Director of Student Recruitment, as well as with the top management of the company.


  • Deepen and support strategic partnerships in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Support the management of a number of high profile existing degree partners, being their senior point of contact, and developer wider commercial opportunities with them.
  • Secure new partnerships, presenting FutureLearn’s credentials and distinctiveness to prospective universities, working with the Partnerships team.
  • Jointly develop and execute a partnership development plan to achieve targets and expand the company’s revenues in the region.
  • Attend relevant conferences to evangelise for FutureLearn and its pedagogical approaches to delivering high quality learning at scale.
  • Discuss student recruitment performance for individual courses and support efforts to improve performance of the combined efforts of FutureLearn and the University.
  • Manage and monitor relationships with local third party suppliers to ensure they are operating according to SLAs and in close partnership with FutureLearn.
  • Represent and advocate for the context and requirements of regional university partners within FutureLearn.
  • Discuss course ideas with partners to support FutureLearn’s course portfolio strategy, particularly identifying topics of real strength for a particular partner.
  • Support partnership managers in the portfolio team to ensure adherence to FutureLearn’s course quality criteria and editorial guidelines, and best practice implementation of FutureLearn tools and services.
  • Support contracting and on-boarding process for new partners in FutureLearn to ensure delivery of high-quality courses in profitable areas.
  • Qualify, develop, and close partnerships with Universities and other institutions, including professional bodies and centres of excellence, removing obstacles at any stage.


You will be able to demonstrate the following experience, knowledge and abilities;

  • The ability to manage partnerships with organisations with complex needs, a high volume and value of output and high strategic importance for the company
  • The ability to build strong channels of communication to help influence long-term strategic alignment with partners
  • Experience of leading complex projects that have multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of negotiating difficult conversations and managing conflict confidently
  • The ability to anticipate the impact of platform/strategy changes for partners and proactively communicating both internally and externally
  • The ability to spot opportunities to increase revenue or decrease costs and actively pursue them
  • Experience of analysing qualitative and quantitative data and communicating the results internally and externally
  • The ability to bring about change by using evidence to build support and influence decision makers
  • The ability to influence partners’ course design in order to improve learner experience
  • The ability to represent FutureLearn externally across a variety of media including public speaking and written content
  • The ability to embrace change and lead more effective ways for colleagues and partners to work
  • The ability to identify possible problems or stumbling blocks and effectively problem solve and/or contingency plan
  • Knowledge of developments in Higher Education, EdTech and other relevant sectors
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and learning design principles
  • Knowledge of basic web content development principles and usability principles across device types
