Launch Engineer, Fluid Systems (Cape Canaveral)


The SpaceX Hawthorne launch site design team is looking for a driven hydraulics engineer to join our team of fluids engineers. As a whole, the fluids engineering team is responsible for all of the fluids systems necessary to launch our Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets including our Liquid Oxygen, RP-1 kerosene, Helium, Nitrogen, hydraulics, and Air Conditioning systems. As a hydraulics engineer, you will be given significant autonomy over all aspects of the hydraulics system upgrades at our various locations. Key responsibilities include system design, implementation, activation, and sustainment planning.


  • Engineer and design heavy industrial hydraulic systems using fundamentals of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer
  • Select components and provide detailed specifications for the purchase of hydraulic components
  • Complete all design and drafting of hydraulic schematics
  • Interact with vendors and resolve technical issues
  • Assist technicians with advanced troubleshooting of hydraulic systems
  • Plan and manage design projects to meet the requirements for production and new product development
  • Assist in the maintenance, and operation of the vehicle transporter erector (TE) including all of the TE hydraulic systems
  • Work closely with the local site teams along with the larger SpaceX workforce
  • Interact with all departments and aspects of the rocket design
  • Lead all activation testing of the hydraulics system with a small team of engineers and technicians

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience working with complex fluid or mechanical systems in a professional setting or outside the classroom project team

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in an engineering discipline
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Good written and oral communication (especially translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences)
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and best practices
  • Strong engineering computational knowledge and familiarity with hydraulic formulas
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere

Additional Requirements:

  • Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing
  • Must be able to pass Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg Air Force Station background checks
