What You Will Do

Project Field Engineers within Central Automation Engineering directly support the Product Engineers with all field activities. They maintain in depth, practical product knowledge across all of our products which include both developed in house and externally sourced. They also directly support other teams during the design, manufacture and install phases of new fulfillment centers. Providing ongoing product support to Engineering Ops and Continuous Improvement teams, they need to be able to resolve any engineering issues as well as provide valuable feedback to the development team for future developments.

As a lead, you provide both technical and people leadership / management for a small team of field engineers and any additional contracted resources. You will be responsible for setting an excellent example and coordinating work to ensure we have global consistency in our processes, product and support in an efficient and scalable manner. You will need to recruit and grow the team and its capabilities to meet your internal customers needs inline with the global field engineering strategy.

Day-to-day responsibilities could include:

  • Ensure MSC has everything necessary to work up any quality/supply chain related issue or solution through the appropriate process
  • Ensure Product Engineers have everything necessary to work up any required product change request or solution through the Change Control Process
  • Ensure Field mark ups of product documentation (drawings, manuals, guides, checklists etc.) are sent in a timely and clear manner to technical support colleagues & Product Engineers
  • Maintain product and process quality at all times
  • Provide direct engineering product support as required, ensuring issues are appropriately resolved
  • Formally communicate product issues back to technical support colleagues and escalate to product engineers as required
  • Responsible for reporting of field visits
  • Deliver the roll out of workpacks either directly or through managed subcontract resources
  • Support Automation Engineering Implementation with installation & commissioning expertise and advice, ensuring best practice is followed and understood
  • Work closely with our Product Development colleagues to receive new products and developments, be actively engaged with early field deliveries of new products to ensure successful handover of products to Central Automation Engineering team
  • Adhere to all CDM (or local equivalent) guidance, both external (CDM Regulations 2015 and associated Guidance L153) and internal (the Ocado CDM15 procedures and processes, HS&E policy and associated Arrangement Policies) and seek guidance from the HS&E team when necessary
  • Efficient workflow management of team of product engineers working on multiple projects in multiple locations globally
  • Develop the individuals on the team and ensure the resiliency within the team
  • Accountable for deliverables of your team
  • Establish, maintain and champion engineering best practices and standards

Who You Are

To qualify for this position, you should meet the following requirements:

  • At least 2 years experience with Project Engineering 
  • At least 5 years experience with field installation of products and/or systems 
  • At least 3 years experience in a lead or management role
  • Acceptance Testing
  • Ability to successfully deliver projects on time and within approved budgets
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite and comfortable using CAD packages
  • Excellent technical and practical competence relating to automation and general engineering
  • Experience with projects and products in manufacturing, automotive, airports, FMCG distribution or similar field
  • Remote Product Support
  • Understanding of applicable directives, codes standards etc (eg machinery directive)

Preferred (in addition to minimum):

  • Working knowledge of a range of project management skills, tools and approaches
  • Able to define and establish management process
  • Experience managing remote teams
  • International working experience

Location:

This is a remote position that will require 60% travel to our sites across North America.
