Job Description

The Managing Editor will play a key role in overseeing a scoop-driven newsroom, helping to shape coverage of breaking news, enterprise, and investigations across all sections—from politics to opinion to media to world news to entertainment. They will coordinate news-gathering with the social and art teams and foster collaboration across the entire staff. They will report to the editor in chief and be part of a senior leadership team that sets standards, develops new editorial strategies and innovations, and recruits talent. 

Responsibilities

• Organize the daily news budget with an eye toward ensuring we have sharp, differentiated, and up-to-date coverage. Consult with section editors, participate in news meetings, pitch and field story ideas.
• Oversee newsroom staffing, ensuring we have adequate coverage throughout the year.
• Coordinate long-range newsroom planning—from investigative projects to coverage of major pre-scheduled events.
• Manage one or more reporters, commissioning and editing their stories.

 Qualifications

• 5+ years experience as a journalist, including 3+ years as an editor, preferably with experience in breaking news, politics, and world or national news.
• A track record of success in accountability journalism, delivering scoops, and finding unique angles on competitive stories.
• A high news metabolism, combined with the ability to drill down on long-term investigations and projects.
• Ability to respond to fast-breaking events in a 24-hour news cycle.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Willingness to collaborate with others and demonstrated capacity to work well in a team environment
• An understanding of audience analytics
• A passion for newsroom mentorship
• The position also requires excellent relationship and collaboration skills, professionalism, negotiation and problem solving, and the ability to work effectively at all levels of a multi-level organization.
• Based in NYC, regular in-office time is required.

Pay Range Salary:

The pay range for this position is $105,000 to $120,000 annually. 

The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, performance and other factors. The range listed is just one component of The Daily Beast’s total compensation package. The Daily Beast provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, 401K employer matching program, paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
