The Role

Reporting to the Director of Mechanical Engineering and working closely with peers within the Mechanical Engineering team and across other engineering disciplines, the successful candidate will have a passion for all areas of mechanical design and will have the ability to comprehend new technology and see through technical difficulties.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Finite Element Analysis of components and assemblies under harsh operating conditions such as shock, vibration and thermal
  • Creation of new designs, taking them from concept to production, covering aspects of our core product range, prototypes, technology demonstrators and testing solutions
  • Work to ensure the design will deliver the correct level of functionality & performance, is manufacturable and meets cost targets
  • Rigorous design verification using calculation, analysis and test
  • Creation of drawings, specifications & reports
  • Build and test of prototypes and technology demonstrators
  • Support other areas of product development as necessary, ability to act as a mechanical advisor to other disciplines within the organisation
  • Off-site visits eg. to manufacturing or test facilities on an “as-needs” basis
  • Keep in touch with emerging technologies, materials, technical obsolescence, changes in design practices and tools

Requirements

Essential Skills and/or Experience Needed:

  • FEA experience – thermal and structural. Experience in the use of Ansys or similar tools is required
  • 3+ years of experience in the field of satellite communication terminals, or equivalent technically demanding products / electronics packaging
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of designing equipment for use in harsh environments
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering discipline
  • Strong drive to close issues & to achieve the best combined solution
  • Hands-on approach – experience of prototype build, test & qualification
  • Excellent communication skills, team player, ability to present own and others work at design and program reviews
  • Experience of PDM and PLM tools and processes
  • Organisational skills to deliver multiple projects to tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes

Not essential but highly desirable skills:

  • Direct experience of working with Phased array, Flat Panel or Electronically Scanned Antennas
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes
