The Innovation Team at Vulcan is seeking a creative, results-oriented Sr. Mechanical Engineer. This person will be responsible for a demanding and rewarding variety of duties related to the research, development, and delivery of systems including aerospace systems, medical devices, and environmental sensors. Our prime objective is to dream, create, and incubate innovative technical ideas into reality.

If you are the person destined for this position, you have a combination of deep experience with mechanical design, electro-mechanical components, system engineering, rapid prototyping, vendor management, integration & testing, field trials, and an upbeat approach to working with colleagues.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will play a critical role in the development of integrated systems to address philanthropic needs and commercial opportunities. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the successful design and manufacture of components and systems from inception through field trials and delivery. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will also help build our rapid prototyping infrastructure, engineering process development, negotiate and manage contracts with vendors, and represent Vulcan to external parties 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Design electro-mechanical components and assemblies using solid modeling and structural analysis tools.
  • Generate drawings and coordinate manufacturing and procurement of parts and assemblies.
  • Assemble and test components and assemblies.
  • Support field operations.
  • Iterate designs based on feedback and test results.
  • Demonstrate honesty, responsibility, integrity and fulfillment of commitments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, experience, skill, and/or ability

  • Superior at mechanical design and highly experienced at CAD and drawing creation
  • Proficiency with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Well versed in structural analysis – hand calculations and FEA
  • Familiarity with aerospace components, robotics, consumer electronics including actuators, servo-mechanisms, printed circuit boards, wiring, batteries, connectors, etc.
  • Experienced with procurement & vendor management
  • Highly skilled in rapid prototyping and various manufacturing techniques including 3D printing
  • Understands quality control and inspection methods
  • Experienced in assembly & integration, testing, and field operations
  • Experienced implementing a product data management (PDM) system
  • Comfortable mentoring junior engineers
  • Experience with UAS technologies is a major plus

Required computer skills

  • Solidworks or equivalent
  • ANSYS or equivalent
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Project Management software such as MS Project, Jira, or Wrike
  • Familiarity with Labview or Arduino is a plus

Education/experience/certifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from accredited institution and 10 plus years relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
