Media Technician I-III (2020)

The Media Operations team is integral to the construction and screening of thousands of microbes per week. To support this, we are looking for Media Technician(s) I/II/III who is thoughtful, meticulous, well-organized, energetic, collaborative, and fully engaged in assisting in the execution of the workflows. This person will participate in efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of the protocols used to support the Operations team. In addition, the Technician will help shape the technical and cultural aspects of the media services team and establish best practices within a growing company.

Immediate responsibilities include:

  • Production of a variety of complex media and buffers in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Batch record preparation and accurate real-time documentation on all required worksheets and software.
  • Operation of sterilization and automation equipment proficiently and safely.
  • Research chemicals, solubility, compatibility, QC parameters, etc. to aide in troubleshooting/development as needed.
  • Outline, develop, publish, and train on SOPs
  • Generate and interpret data/metrics to help make suggestions on process improvements
  • Use problem-solving skills to report and help address anomalies or deviations logged on the floor.
  • Proactive communication with management to provide feedback on operations.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of process/workflow improvements
  • Exercise good independent judgment and provide potential solutions to problems based on experience with GLP, cGMP, QMS, Lean Manufacturing principles. 
  • Be a driving force on the team to meet production deadlines while maintaining a safe, efficient, and positive lab environment

 

Qualifications/Experience

We require experience in complex and intense environments. Work history should show substantial skill in organizing complex projects including running several projects simultaneously within a fast-paced workplace. We prefer candidates that have worked in manufacturing environments, developed and used protocols, and worked within highly collaborative teams. Lastly, we look for candidates that have displayed excellence and high achievement in previous technical and non-technical work. 

 

  • Level I: Four-year science degree preferred but not required
  • Level II/III: Four-year science degree preferred but not required
  • Understanding and application of the sterile technique in a manufacturing environment
  • Equipment and reagent sterilization, including the use of autoclaves and filtration systems
  • Experience preparing buffers, handling enzymes, and making media, fermentation media a plus
  • Experience writing, optimizing, and adhering to complicated SOPs (required for Level II/III, preferred for Level I) 
  • Capability managing multiple ongoing multiday workflows, including scheduling instrumentation, preparing reagents, execution, and thorough documentation  (required for Level II/III, preferred for Level I) 
  • Ability to proactively recognize & identify quality issues and escalate as needed
  • Aide in-process updates rolled out by management
  • Familiarity with techniques in molecular biology, including PCR, restriction enzyme digests, DNA sequencing sample prep, microbe transformation (bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi); with cell physiology in microtiter plate models and in bench-scale fermentation; and with an assay such as HPLC, GC, plate-based enzymatic assays, or other optical measurements
  • Ability to use software tools including those built in house and those use broadly (e.g. Excel, ERP systems,) to track inventory, share SOPs, and analyze data
  • Excellent verbal and oral communication/listening skills

  • Ability to submit to medical screening to demonstrate fitness for duty requiring exposure to certain chemical and biological substances

 

The position may require work outside of the normal business hours (M-F 9-6) including weekends and holidays. Our facilities are located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
