About the Technology @ THG

Our software is the core of our business and enables the company to continue to grow and thrive. The Group’s industry leading and proprietary technology platform powers its own consumer sites plus global media partners and brand owners, including: Unilever, Nintendo and the Daily Mail Group. We develop all of our own applications in-house with our Development Delivery Teams. In order to enable our Delivery Teams to continue to achieve, we are always looking for bright and intellectual people who are happy to push boundaries and really challenge the status quo.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engineering and defining builds, backup/restore, DR and monitoring standards
  • Providing day to day support and technical expertise
  • Taking ownership of and standardising the current infrastructure
  • Design and maintenance of a business-critical multi-site environments utilising HADR technologies
  • Working closely with developers and other IT teams – advising on design, performance tuning, discussing and implementing code changes
  • Understanding and managing database security
  • Performing out-of-hours work such as server migrations, patching and upgrades as necessary
  • Collaborating with the wider engineering and operational teams to resolve issues impacting Database infrastructure (e.g. IT infrastructure such as storage, VMs and networks)
  • Documentation of processes and procedures
  • Training the existing (SQL Server Focused) team, providing clearly documented operational guides

Requirements

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience of most aspects of Database Administration using PostgreSQL or EnterpriseDB
  • Experience in writing Stored Procs and Functions
  • Strong scripting skills - Bash/Python/powershell to perform automation, maintenance tasks and review code
  • Exposure to HA/DR features (Multi-master Replication, Hot Standby)
  • Implementing Patching and Upgrade cycles
  • Exposure to Config Management – Puppet, Ansible, Chef, Git
  • Strong performance tuning diagnostics of both the RDBMS and OS (preferably Linux)
  • An understanding of the wider IT infrastructure (Linux, Windows, Networks, Storage, VMWare)
  • Ability to deliver high quality, methodical and process driven work
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A willingness and desire to expand your skillset out to other database technologie

DESIREABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Clustering (VCS, RedHat, Windows)
  • SQLServer RDBMS administration
  • Storage knowledge (SAN, Snapshots)
  • Networking knowledge (Firewalls, TCP)
  • Kubernetes
