Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
This position requires an individual who can effectively perform 2 separate job functions: (1) Operation and maintenance of a molecular-beam epitaxy system for deposition of III-V compound semiconductor films, and (2) electro-optical testing of infrared detectors in cryogenic dewars.
Candidate will execute recipes for deposition of infrared detector device structures using molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Candidate will maintain database of records of MBE growths, including sensor data, growth system operating parameters, and postgrowth wafer characterization. Candidate will take lead role in maintaining MBE system operation, including functioning as interface to internal equipment support group, as well as external vendors, for execution of repair and maintenance activities on MBE systems. In addition, candidate will perform electrical and optical tests (dark current, quantum efficiency, and spectral response) on infrared test devices in cryogenic dewars, in support of multiple R&D programs.
Direct hands-on experience over a period > 3 years with the operation and maintenance of MBE systems is required. An understanding of ultrahigh vacuum system hardware (pumps, controllers, seals, effusion cells) is required. Knowledge of semiconductor materials physics and epitaxial growth techniques, as well as the ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device performance is essential. Proficiency in use of computers, engineering work stations, MBE equipment, discrete detector test equipment, and common electronic test equipment is required. The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing is necessary to facilitate interaction with customers, colleagues, and vendors.
Experience with thin-film materials characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy, IR Transmission, and optical microscopy is desirable. Experience with optoelectronic test equipment, including blackbody sources, lock-in amplifiers, current-voltage test hardware, and cryogenic dewars is a plus, as is familiarity with IR detector processing, testing of discrete detectors, and basic radiometry test protocols.
Minimum of a B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on semiconductor materials and optoelectronic devices. Candidates with an M.S. degree will be given preference.
Must be able to work safely in laboratory settings including semiconductor processing and materials growth areas and clean room facilities. Must be capable of working around toxic and hazardous materials with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment. Certification for Supplied-Air Respirator usage will be required. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces, have the capacity for lifting heavy objects, and possess both visual and hearing acuity.
U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.
