What you will be doing:

The People Specialist is the cheerleader and ambassador of our growing team of Elevaters. You will be immersed in many different areas of HR while supporting our high-performing passionate Elevaters who seek to bring equity to education. The People Specialist embodies and celebrates our culture of excellence in every interaction with employees and contractors, alike. Doing our jobs effectively means that every team member is successful from day one and every team has the talent and support needed to meet and exceed our ambitious business goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the operations behind our people functions - this includes supporting benefits, compliance, employee engagement, and recognition activities
  • Champion and promote our evolving work culture (including tools, programs, and initiatives to make in-person and remote work successful and fun)
  • Spearhead employee engagement activities including chairing our Elevater social committee, monthly happy hours, team outings, biannual employee awards ceremony, and more!
  • Own employee pre-boarding and offboarding processes to ensure exceptional experiences while keeping a keen eye on compliance and security
  • Act as a contractor and temporary staffing liaison, including recruitment, onboarding and offboarding support, and agreement creation and management
  • Maintain an appropriate level of process, program, and policy knowledge in order to assist internal employees and contractors with a variety of requests
  • Maintain employee records in HRIS System, personnel folders, and our team org chart
  • Coordinate pre-employment screening requirements for new employees and contractors
  • Complete employee verifications
  • Completes Forms I-9, verifies I-9 documentation, and maintains I-9 files
  • Administer new hire benefits enrollment and our annual open enrollment processes
  • Assist in the preparation of internal and contractor payroll
  • Think about how to continually improve and scale our People Team work and systems
  • This is a hybrid position, requiring working in our downtown Chicago office 2 days/week

Who you Are:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in an HR generalist position
  • Clear, concise, and effective communication and exceptional detail orientation
  • Utmost respect for the confidentiality of employee and company information
  • Systems thinker - you can see a process, identify issues, and deploy corrections
  • A passion for creating equitable people processes that include and serve all employees
  • Appreciate the freedom and accountability that comes with leading your portion of the business
  • Have an ability to identify opportunities, successes, and failures quickly and act upon them in a thoughtful manner
  • Able to adhere to our hybrid working model of both in-office and remote work

What is nice to have:

  • Previous work experiences with a progressive People/Talent/HR function at a SaaS technology company
  • Undergraduate or graduate coursework in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Learning and Development, etc
