Portfolio Manager

Within Ocado Group sits Platform Implementation, whose mission is ‘to orchestrate the implementation of Ocado’s platforms globally’. This department focuses on the full programme management life cycle of the implementation of our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) - from pre-deal, through to the design, construction, installation, testing and ‘go-live’ phases (with all the process and portfolio management in between). This department is instrumental in ensuring we deliver these CFCs on time, to budget, and to the specific requirements of each client.

The Business Development team is now looking for a Programme Manager - Portfolio Planning to join, to take accountability for driving our Portfolio Planning activities and positively influencing our future project horizon. This position owns the creating and reporting (to board level) of the entirety of the Platform Implementation project portfolio, providing considered recommendations and analysis that encompass both technical and commercial risks and opportunities.

Please note, this role is based at our Head Office in Hatfield, but some UK/international travel may be required.


What will you be doing?

  • Leadership of the portfolio planning team with direct and indirect reports
  • Developing the team to ensure the required competency and capability is achieved
  • Working with appropriate stakeholders / related departments to ensure that joint or inter-related activities, process etc are well planned, coordinated and efficient 
  • Ensuring portfolio planning issues, risks (threats and opportunities) are recorded, communicated and escalated for steers as required 
  • Designing, generating and publishing any written reporting on portfolio status, issues etc as required
  • Driving continuous improvement of the Portfolio Planning methodology to reflect evolving requirements
  • Presenting portfolio analysis to various levels of management up to the exec board
  • Maintaining an up to date and accurate view of the Platform Implementation project portfolio
  • Proposing and analysing scenarios to optimise the supply and demand profiles across the portfolio (people and MHE/technology)

About you...

  • A degree calibre individual with a highly mathematical/analytical mindset
  • Extensive experience of operating to project methodologies, including detailed governance, risk management and associated reporting
  • Portfolio planning experience in engineering, supply chain or logistics environments
  • Experience of leading a team within a portfolio/capacity management environment
  • Can adapt style to different stakeholders, clients and situations
  • Strong commercial awareness and management
  • Ability to read situations and understand the commercial and contractual impact
  • Ability to pick up and work with complex problems and arguments then develop, resolve and communicate around them using innovative and creative thinking
  • Proficient in typical office software products such as MS Office, Google Office etc especially spreadsheets to an advanced level
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Good spoken and written English supporting excellent communication and presentation skills
